Hello All,

I'm thinking about getting a cheap 4x4, a measly budget of £200-£1000.

Am I going to get anything half decent for that?

I would prefer diesel, what would you recommend?

Thanks cool

Depends what you're using it for but :

Daihatsu Fourtrak
Vauxhal Frontera
Suzuki SJ of some sort
Old Landy
Old Discovery

All under or around a grand.

Plenty of classic rangies. Might as well do it in style.

I am assuming he actually wants to drive the car, not just sit in it and make brrrrrrm noises whilst holding the steering wheel?

Lob some winters on it. I used to drive in Upstate NY in a 300bhp RWD car with no bother on winter tyres.

What he says! My MX5 was passing lots of stuck 4x4's last winter on it's winters. Cheaper than a cheap 4x4 too, although doesn't get past the PH urge to buy yet another car that we don't strictly need wink

Fourtak - will go anywhere off road, effortlessly reliable but the clincher is that they can do 30mpg.

Although I fully agree, there is one advantage to a 4x4, the ground clearance. We won't tell him about the front splitter based snow ploughing. wink

Pfft, nothing a big wedge of right foot won't sort out. hehe It all depends what it is like where he is.

Twisted as it may be, it could just be cheaper to buy a second car than new winters, depending on the size.

I bought this nearly 4 years ago for £800ish, complete with lpg!

Always used for towing, never missed a beat in the last 20,000 miles and never got stuck in the snow!

Took a bit of digging out this time though!
