Having just got my dream car E61 M5, problems have arose.

Going slowly around right hand turns causes a grinding noise from the rear of the car.
A few hours later and my local dealer has diagnosed rear vdiff problems.
The car is now booked in to get repaired on the 12th this month.

Went out this morning to run a laptop to my daughter in Colchester and now have the Emissions light showing.
FFS I have only had the car for a week and a half and what about the BMW 120 point approved check?
I think the guy who did mine was eiher having a very off day, or did not give a ste.

Am I alone in expecting better from an approved BMW car?

Fully understand the frustration but then again, if this happened without the AUC warranty you would be in a world of financial pain. When the repair are done you will soon forget about the hassle when that V10 has devoured the first tank after some spirited driving!

The 120 point check is as much use as a chocolate fireguard . The only thing it's good for is the warranty.
It's the same story as when you hear people talking about how they will only buy a car if it has full BMW service history.
Yes it's good for resale to those who don't understand, but when you think about the fact that if the car has BMW specialist service history it will have been serviced better than by a mechanic at BMW who does not care. At a specialist it's there business on the line and there craftsmanship to gain more custom from word of mouth.

Anyway, rant over. I am sure BMW will sort your car out. And as has been mentioned the car is awesome. Enjoy!
Just find a specialist to look after it, not BMW main dealer.

Don't panic mate! Your diff 'grinding' noise is normal on M cars. All it needs is the oil changing from the standard gloop to the special FM-Booster stuff. It'll cure the noise within 200 miles.

As for emissions, can't help there.

'Grinding' would be worrying, 'squealing' is more like the noise the M diffs make surely?

Squeeling is abnormal. The grinding noise is the diff plates sticking.

Yep, I had the diff noise. Changed oil and bobby's your best mate. The emissions thing is probably a sensor.

Why would it have the wrong oil in it? How often should it be changed?

Strictly speaking they don't use the wrong oil, its just that the side effect is diff noise. Its not damaging the car so don't worry, its just plain annoying. The FM-Booster will save your nerves.

Just got her back after 3 days with BMW.
New Oxygen sensor cured the emissions warning light. They did not just replace the oil in the diff, they also replaced a lot of parts as well according to the service guy I dealt with.

Fair play to BMW, they gave me a courtsey car and have not charged me for the courtesy car or the work carried out.
After driving the 116i courtesy car, what a pleasure it was to get back into the M5.
I really love this car. It is rather thirsty but has very few peers.

It doesn't have the "wrong" oil - it's just the factory standard. However since the E46 and E60 developed the same symptoms (grinding diff) BMW brought out a friction modifer oil - cost about £30 a litre! I changed mine at 5 years old, as a preventative measure. Don't worry about it - a well known "feature" on M cars in the last generation. smile

Any chance you can get a list of the parts that were replaced for the curious amongst us?

Big job but pretty straight forward. Easier than stripping the diff and repairing. Bolt on - bolt off.
