Peter Tatchell is on BBC1 at the moment suggesting a one off 20% tax on the 'richest 10%'.

Of course we all know this starts at about £50K a year so most people in this bracket aren't rich at all. But Tatchell says it's OK because they are the people who are buying '£50 million pound yachts and jets'.

Can he really expect anyone to believe this crap?

Why is a gay rights activist giving advice on the economy?

I'm sure he does but that does not mean he should be given a platform to talk about any old st. Why does he get the chance to spout like this just because he is a 'famous' campainer?

Oh I fully agree, I think he's just on the list of overt lefties the BBC trot out to bring "fair and balanced" discussion to our screens, regardless of how under qualified they are to talk on the subject at hand.

Interesting that he's happy to discriminate against rich people on the basis of them having substantially more money that yow.

Glad it's that easy - we should have all this debt stuff sorted out now we've got properly clever people like him thinking about it.

I don't see the problem. He is suitably educated - he has a 2i in Sociology. It's an ology. He's a scientist!

I have a lot of respect for Tatchell - unlike most other lefties he actually backs up his words with some action. That said, by his own admission he is 'brain damaged' so it's no surprise that he talks nonsense from time to time.

There's an easy way to achieve that, depreciate the currency by 20%.

Oh, wait...

20% of what, though?

If it's 20% of assets, then that's millions and millions who are going to have to sell their home or remortgage to pay a tax bill that far exceeds their liquid assets.

Why should anyone pay anything anymore to the scum who pissed it all up against the wall during years of mismanagement?

Start with Tatchell he has a few bob, Blair Cambpell, Kinnock, and all the other two faced tts that have ever held office.

Take all their assets away to componsate the people for the screwups then?

When that happens then they can make demands of others imho?
Hmmmm

The problem with 'taxing the rich' is that 'the rich' are the most mobile of people. If you are wealthy you can live pretty much anywhere and if the tax in one place becomes too onerous people move.

That is the issue with the 50% tax rate, through mobility and the use of legitimate tax avoidance in arguably brings in less tax revenue than a lower rate would.

I've an idea, we could have a 30% tax on the assets of all those who are socialist (unless they are on income support/disability benefits). They will no doubt support such a position because they agree that assets should be distributed and the rest of us don't want to do so, which means everyone is happy.

Tatchell can't be talking about the top 10% by income as there's not much left in those places to tax. He must be talking about the top 10% by net worth in terms of cash, properties, possessions. HINWIs.

Just another yelp for an envy tax from a socialist, move along, nothing to see.

Former Parliamentary Candidate for both the Labour Party and the Green Party, Guardian contributor, Gay Rights activist, holds a 2:1 in Sociology and Environmental Activist and Campaigner. Well, he's almost entitled by law to a place on the BBC!

So why exactly is this person's opinions on Economics, tax and the Economy at all relevant or important? Im a fan of credentials and if he was on the BBC on matters of gay rights or something then fair enough but what i hate about the BBC now is you need to be some sort of self victimising minority to have your opinion count for anything. And people who have no qualifications to an opinion on the subject they're spouting about have their opinion credited as fact and credible by an organisation which still alot of people trust.

Is he an economist? Does he have business experience or expertise? Even Alastair Darling has more credentials than this man on such matters, at least he has experience of fking an economy up so should be well placed to know what not to do at least.

'Tax the richest 10%' is a plan which doesnt work. Labour tried that with the 50p tax rate, knowing that nobody who actually earns money votes Labour anyway as Labour's key support and voting base is teachers, nurses, public sector workers and benefit claimants. The end result of the 50p tax rate is some rich folk moved from the UK and took their business with them which can result in things like shop branches closing and people being put out of work so as the owner can pay more tax to make everything better, things like that. And proper mathematicians have calculated the 50p tax rate has made no difference, it doesnt bring in extra to the Government and it hasnt benefitted anybody lower down the pay scale either.

Just for the record, my wife is a Nurse and she is a member of the Conservative Party wink I am also a Tory voter and a public sector worker and would be a paid up Tory, if I could smile

I doubt whether we are unique.
