starting issues!!

hi, just had bit of of a nightmare with the cerb.
lovely run out (only did about 30 miles), and thought i'd fill up before I went home.
damn thing wouldn't start when I had filled up.
the battery is nearly new and in good order, but it turned over really really slowly and wouldn't start.
tried jump starting off a nice passer by, but then got an electrical smell so stopped.
cursing and swearing I walked home (not too bad, only about a mile or so) collected some tools to investigate and went back.
just before I started fiddling, I thought I'd give it one last go and away she went!!
I presume the started motor didn't like it after a run out??
hot starting issues?
any other ideas?

Similar issue with mine today - turned out I had the fans and aircon on whilst trying to start. Was fine when they were switched off. My battery might be rather low at the minute too.
My sp6 does this all the time.Give it a blast,turn off,on starting it goes woo...woo..woo slowly & then will fire up.Always starts though.And only after a run & re starting pretty quick after stopping.Rest of the time it starts on the button.
Now I bet none of you are making the woo woo sound correctly ,but I quite like the idea of a load of Cerb owners going woo woo.Some no doubt even sounding like a train .

Had the same issue on my Tuscan. First reared it's head after stopping for fuel enroute back from Le Mans. Had to wait about 1/2 hour and it started again.
Not sure if it's the same on an AJP but on a SP6 when they're on the way out they play up when hot. Replaced with a recon starter from Dom and it was fine after that.

Hmmmm! I watch this with interest, as mine has shown some of these symtoms lately.
While changing the clutch slave recently I had to remove the starter motor to get the bell housing off. Is this the same 'route in' (i.e. exhaust, propshaft & gearbox out) to change the starter, or is there a more straight forward approach?

You can get it changed from the engine bay.
From memory you need to remove the scuttle panel, the fuel rail, some small fuel pipes in the way, etc and you can just about access it from there.
It's not easy but you will do it in a few hours.
If you have a second pair of hands it makes it much easier.
Picture it as the starter being located just behind the radio but you have to get at it from above the engine.

thanks all, my gut feel was starter on it's way out, as i had this type of thing years ago on a mini.
I'll have to price up a new one and take the plunge.
I don't like the sinking feeling you get, when you have to push the cerb off the petrol station forecourt and hope when it cools down it might go again!!!
any idea where best to get a new one and a ball park price?
