Sorry, A what lens thread.

Hi PH,

Just realised i have a few pennies in the bank that i would like to splash out onto a new lens. I currently only have the 50mm F2.8 and the standard lens at 17-55mm on my Canon 550D.
I love my 50mm lens for use in the low light situations but the problem lies with the fixed rate. I need a lot more wide angle when i shoot. The standard lens is ok in day use but is very poor in low light situations and quality of the photographs could be better.

So just looking around for lenses that i could add and are of use to my collection. Some suggested the 17-40mm F4, now i know its not great in low light and my camera not being a full frame one its not the ideal lens but the quality and build of it seems really good that i might be tempted by it. The Canon 17-55 F2.8 looks like a good deal, gives me the freedom of what i need and looks good in low light. Just not sure if its worth the money or i should be looking at something different.

My main photography use is, friends, parties, a bit of landscape. urban/walkaround and the occasional panning shots but i get close to the track so don't need a mega zoom lens. Any suggestions to help me out. I am not a total lens geek and not sure what area to be looking at.

When faced with the same problem in Nikon-land, I got the 17-55mm f2.8 and it's great. Can't speak for the Canon version though.

I assume you bean the 18-55 kit lens.

17-55f2.8 IS is so worth the money its untrue.

There are 3rd party alternatives, the best is sigmas 18-50f2.8 OS, but I have the canon and it does everything your looking for.

It's going to be a 2.8 really, of whatever zoom length you think might suit; 18-50/24-70 would be worth a look
