The old ozone layer is back and the hole is getting bigger.

Wait for this one, apparently its because its getting colder in the Arctic.

So much for Global warming then, we had better all start pumping out as much CO2 as possible to try and heat things up and close the hole.

You just could not make this stuff up

Edited to add in linky and put in the hole smile

But it was only a few weeks ago they said it was getting warmer in the arctic (how warm can a big ball of ice really be?) and ice is falling away and thats why we should get out of our car and use a more polluting bus instead.

So, what is it?

Is the Ozone Layer getting bigger or the HOLE in the ozone layer getting bigger?

The hole in their story is getting bigger.

So CFCs had nothing to do with it after all!

CFCs had everything to do with it.

Interesting story about CFCs, which were invented by the same man who discovered/invented the use of tetraethyl lead on petrol. Two inventions that tealy harmed the planet/people.

He contracted polio I believe, was crippled and inverts a complex system of hoists and pulleys sonhe could move himself around in bed. He was killed when his invention went wrong and attacked him to death.

Why is thwe hole getting bigger again - especially since CFCs are no longer as prevalent as they were?

Is there some other mechanism at work over which (shock horror) we have no control?

Are you entirley sure about that? IIRC it was just a theory that was never proved. The whole world abandoned CFC's ( with some companies making fortunes) because of tales of doom and gloom.
Nothing was ever proved.

Sounds very familiar.

Ready as always to be corrected.

CFCs were deeply damaging, to the extent that all countries banned them in short order, and that problem was solved. There were reasonable substitutes readily available, so it wasn't too hard.

I didn't think we're allowed to call it global warming any more? Of course, the fact a phrase like "climate change" can cover any eventuality and thus can be used as evidence for anything is pure coincidence

But we still have a hole - and it's growing. So, what's causing the current "problem"?

What else will we have to ban?

haven't read up on this for ages, i understand though that the HFCs or whatever they use instead of CFCs have an unintended negative effect due to their longer lifetime in the atmosphere.

Acid rain anyone?

I thought they then found out that the ozone hole expanded and contracted on a 7 year cycle (or something like that).
