Just bought an MX5 - advice much appreciated.
Discussion
Hello all. I have just bought a Mk2 Mazda MX5. It's a bit of a fixer upper - I discovered a lot of rust in the rear sills during a deep clean yesterday, but I reckon it's worth the effort. I have a few questions which it would be much appreciated if any fellow PH'ers can answer.
1) The sills are going to need replacing, or fixing. I live in Redditch (Worcestershire). Does anyone know of, or has anyone used a local specialist in this area for repairs/replacement. It needs to be done ASAP.
2) My drivers side electric window has stopped working. The passenger side is fine. I have taken out the window switch housing unit. There is a definite audible difference when flicking the two switches - so my assumption is that replacing the unit should solve the problem? It's not the fuse, so is there anything else it could be - assuming that I will need to remove the door card if the unit is not the issue?
3) Finally, I am keen to get to know a Mazda MX5 specialist close to me. I have seen that there is a business based in Knowle (solihull). 10 minutes in the car for me, but I can't seem to find a website/number for them. Alternatively, does any one know of/use an MX5 specialist in the Redditch/Surrounding areas.
Thanks in advance.

Hi, I thought I'd reply here for the benefit of others rather than by PM.
Only MX5ives is based just outside Solihull in Knowle.
BUT I have been reducing my MX5 activities for a while as I've been trying to build my house.
I've currently got a lot of men & machinery on hire so I simply can't afford to spend any time on fixing MX5's.
However the only aspect of MX5s I don't get involved in, is bodywork I would love to be able to recommend people but IME all their work is so variable I simply can't do so.
As a guide, IME repairs cost £40 for a small patch - £300 per side depending upon exactly how far it has progressed and the quality of the repair / paint job.
I do still have loads of MX5 parts (new and used, mostly Mk1) and a few cars
Sorry I can't be of any more help.

Hi,
I live just outside Redditch (Studley) and we've got a Mk2 as well. About 2 years ago we had the rear panel and sill replaced at a bodyshop in Tamworth. We supplied the parts and they did a sterling job on the repair and partial respray. I'll need to dig out their details tonight and what we paid for the job but I can highly recommend them. I also use a local garage for servicing and repairs (Unicar on Green Lane, just off The Slough A448 in Studley). They've got an ex-Mazda mechanic working there who knows his stuff. They're a friendly bunch and will collect/deliver the car if required. Their hourly rate isn't bad either and they've got all the required diagnostic equipment as well. Our car was recently serviced, calipers refurbed and MOT'd by them. If you're interested I can PM you the various contact details tonight/tomorrow.
Regards,
Dan

Thanks Dan. That would be helpful. Studley is a stone's throw from me. The details for the Tamworth outfit would be good as well!!I live just outside Redditch (Studley) and we've got a Mk2 as well.
