Currently driving a Mondeo ST TDCi and I really like it, but the mileage is racking up and I feel it is time to replace it.
Trouble is, I can't think of anything that will do everything I want.

Looking for something no bigger, but can be smaller.
40+ MPG
Torquey engine. Probably diesel, but only because I can't think of a petrol that will suit.
Good handling and fun to drive
150+ bhp, ideally nearer 200.
Reliable
Comfortable to drive and good seats (Recaros in the Mondeo will take some beating!)
Not a stupidly expensive tax band.

Only things I can think of is the Octavia and Golf 170 TDi, but neither really exite me.
Cooper S would be nice, but probably a bit too small.

If you like it that much try and get a lower mileage clean example of the same again. Im thinking of doing the same with mine, 2.0 T reg zetec still in good nick but ive spotted a couple of W reg Ghia X's well preserved and might pick one up as i doubt theres many of them left now which havent been ragged.

I'd struggle to find another with the same spec I think. If I could, then that would certainly be an option.

MINI Clubman Cooper SD? BMW 320d? Mercedes C250CDI? Skoda Fabia vRS? VW Golf mk6 GTD? just a few quick and/or diesel cars I can think of off the top of my head.

I love my octavia, great car and well worth a try. The vrs is 170bhp in diesel and 200 in petrol.
I get nearly 40mpg from my petrol that's lots of motorway littering though.

Keep it and lavish the cash you might spend on its replacement on getting, and keeping it tip top?

Merc and Mini are too expensive.
Fabia I've driven and found it a little dull.

Need to look into the BMW more as well as the VW.

92,000 currently.
Just feel it is time to change before any big bills come in.

If you are happy with the car keep it, sod the bills.

Any bills are going to be cheaper than buying a new car.

You can buy another one and have bigger bills.

If you want low bills buy a 1.0 Nova, Corsa, etc.

92k and mileage racking up?!

Just keep it! Seems you're very happy with it, if you look after it properly it should continue being a very good car. Flogging it and buying something unknown carries more risk than keeping a car you know well.

Don't know your budget, but I'd recommend a BMW 118d/120d/123d. I used to own a 120d, absolutely loved it. If you ignore the slightly ambiguous image about it, it's a well-balanced car which you can chuck about happily and yet will return over 55mpg on the motorway. Supremely comfortable too, and with £90 road tax and a good reliability rate I think it's a brilliant car. At least humour me and test drive one. smile

Mk4 2.2TDCI Titanium X. Like your ST-TDCI but better. The ST is a good car, but holy crap the Mk4 Mondeo is just so much better.

We've a few Mk4 2.0TDCI Zetecs, and they're easily as good as the Mk3 ST-TDCI. The Titanium X with the 2.2 has got to be better in every way.

I had the same issue, but the replacement was forced as it was a company car.

My ST was 4 years old, but had only done 64,000 miles whereas I used to run the cars over 120,000 in the same 4 year period.

I would have happily held on to it for another 2 or 3 years as i thought it was that good.

I had a good choice of replacements, including Passat TDis, various Seat TDis, Skoda TDis and Ford Tdis.

I ended up narrowing the choice down to a limited edition Skoda VRS or a Mondeo, either a 2.0L Titanium X or a 2.2L Titanium.

I ended up going for the 2.2 Titanium, despite always having 2nd thoughts about the VRS.

I think it is a great car, massive inside with a great sound system and all the toys you need.

It goes well, handles really well for a big car, and it has been 100% reliable in the last 40,000 miles.

It looks a bit boring after the ST, but it doesn't attract much attention when "pressing on"

I love the looks of the Alfas, but I always ask myself how reliable are they?

I've had a number of company cars over the years, the Fords and Vauxhalls being very reliable, the French stuff being crap.

From a reliability point of view, would the Alfas be more like the Fords or the French cars?
