Had Just came off M1 on way back from tunnel run this morning when i heard a terrible rattling noise that got quicker with engine rpm. This was a similar noise that i got on my Mk1 which resulted in a rebuild. Here we go again,i thought. It sounded like a top end rattle.
After about a mile it completely went away,so i carried on home.Left it for a couple of hours and tried it again, nothing.Had great oil pressure,no smoke or loss of power through whole incident. My car is an 06 with only 16k on clock, has anyone else experienced the self repairing S6 phenomenom, and should i be worried.

Cheers

My engine is very rattley... I'm getting the engine out in the Spring and all the chains adjusted and I understand there is a new chain guide available.

Check if any of your rivets/washers for the airbox lid are missing as these can get sucked in get jammed in pistons make a engine rpm related loud rattle and then if your very very lucky get blown out the exhaust without damaging valves/seats/piston/head. If you are missing rivets/washers check your cats to see if they are sat in there as they wont pass through. I upgraded my airbox fasteners by learning the expensive way.

Another possibilty is a valve shim got stuck trying to jump free, then relocated.

Look in air box first, cats, then rocker cover check cam, shims, followers and borescope if you can borrow one.
