Economical car 11k tops
Discussion
My Clio is dying and I don't use the evo enough so both are getting sold, I'm looking for something economical for short drives 3 mile ish and also long journeys.
Very tempted by the new Kia rio 1.1 crdi with it's 7 yr warranty and good mpg real world 66mpg at 70mph
But the lure of a 118d is strong what are they like on fuel, my mum had a 320d and it was ok mpg wise 45 mpg
Any other suggestions

Aygo for £3k? Maybe if you're rich. If you want a seriously cheap car to run look no further than a VW lupo/SEAT arosa 1.7 sdi/1.4 tdi. My arosa sdi does has done 59 - 76mpg per tank since I bought it in November. It normally does high 60's. There is no turbo to go wrong, it's a doddle to work on and part worn tyres cost £15. The cambelt change was pretty cheap at £190 inc VAT and only needs doing every 60k.
Mine cost me a grand and was absolutely mint.

Get a petrol if you're doing 3 mile journeys. Any modern diesel will be gummed up in a year doing 3 milers, even with the odd long journey.
I do similar miles - 2 mile commute, runs to the shops, and a 150 mile round trip every other weekend. I put petrol in my car once every 5-6 weeks, and it's a 34mpg 1.8 Mondeo. £70 for 6 weeks motoring isn't bad.

Seriously, are you saying you want to sell an Evo and buy a crappy little Kia for a 3 mile journey?
Are you mental

Better still save £10,500 and do 40+mpg by buying my Rover 213S.

That's at least twice I've seen you whoring it out!

All these "What car" threads that fill the forum are a bit daft to me. The Rover does eveything most other cars do.

Never thought I'd see myself agreeing with 300 but he has got a very good point.Seriously, are you saying you want to sell an Evo and buy a crappy little Kia for a 3 mile journey?

Get a bike, get fit, keep the Evo and your dignity/ sanity.

Is it an SE? I had a 214SE as a company car about 15 years ago
Until the gearbox died.Bike £500 + Hire car for £50 or less when you need to a do a long trip.
Disposable Snotter £1k + double the fuel bill of a Kia but no depreciation worthy of note.
£5k on a decent hot hatch half way between the Clio and the EVO + lots of fuel.
£2k on a huge barge of a 7 series or a Jaguar XJ and lots of fuel/fixing stuff money.
Nice pair of walking boots.
Or if you're set on an eco-car then a Honda insight, Audi A2 TDI, VW Lupo/Seat Arosa TDI, and a host of other stuff will do 60-70mpg in normal driving but will cost a lot less to buy.

213S The Honda Ballade with a different badges. The 214 was the K-series, prone to head gasket and gear box failure. There are only 46 SD3 Rover 200's left so even after you use the car for a year the car won't depreciate at all and qualifies for classic insurance to keep the cost down even further.
K-series was only prone to HGF if poorly maintained. There's only 46 SD3 left because they were pants when they came out, and time hasn't improved them.
Did I read that right, a 2 mile commute?
That's less than half an hour's brisk walk FFS.
I'd bet most people would love to be able to walk to work.
Anyway, back on topic. Sell both of your existing cars, buy some derv rattlebox (economy right?) and then seek help for depression in a couple of years.

So what do I do when I need to go out during the day, and there's no pool cars available? That's less than half an hour's brisk walk FFS.

'Sorry boss, I need to dander home and get my car' doesn't cut it.

Rare but not desirable. There are more Morris Minors on the road than Mk1 Mondeos. The disposable cars of today will be the collectors items in the future.
Back on topic-ish; apart from autoegotism why does the op have to spend £11,000 on a car? If it's a commuter I wouldn't spend more than £1000 tops.
