I bought a new 42" TV recently, and the picture is terrible on it. I came from a 32" CRT'ish TV that was doing fine for years, but I fancied something bigger

I get my signal from a Sky (Panasonic) unit, and thats quite old as well. I get the impression that it can't scale to the resolution that the TV wants to run at. If I was to try and put into words what the picture is like, imagine a crappy lo-res jpeg image blown up so that it's all jagged

The XBOX picture is spot on, as is the DVD player.

So can I just swap to a new SKY box from ebay or similar? I don't have a Sky subscription anymore if thats relevent

You really need to be going HD, SD Sky pics are poor. Is your TV an LCD? If so they do not do SD pictures very well.

Are you using a scart to connect the Sky to the TV? If yes, is the scart output from the Sky Box set at RGB?

Yes to your questions, just a standard box into an LCD TV

I don't have any plans to start giving SKY some money, and I don't have a normal aerial so to speak, so I was thinking of maybe swapping the receiver box for something else if it was just a resolution issue

I have a 32" panasonic set and some SD programmes are pretty poor, others are much better.

I have an old VCR/DVD combo (connected via SCART) and a new BluRay player (connected via HDMI). The picture from DVDs played on the BluRay player is vastly superior compared to playing the same disc on the DVD player.

To take advantage of dish and TV you need and HD set-top box connected using HDMI.

Ditch the Sky box and get a Freesat HD box. Also get an aerial for freeview, has your TV got an HD tuner.

Which I'm fine with if I can buy a set top Sky box either new or previously enjoyed without subscription, I don't know if thats possible though. The other option would be to get an aerial put back on the roof I guess

As already suggested get a Freesat HD box.
