Strange reason to fail MOT

Took it in for an MOT at a local garage. It failed 
But it failed because the top of the letters and numbers on the front number plate were too close to the top edge of the plate (5mm instead of the legal 11mm)!! You've got to be joking!!
The strange thing is its the same plate that's been on it since I bought the car 3 years ago from Fernies (it is one of their plates, with their name and number across the bottom). So how did it pass the last three years and not this time?? Should I demand a replacement plate from Fernies?
They also wanted to fail it because of the rear backlit number plate! Apparently they are now illegal as the honeycomb pattern makes the plate unreadable by a speed camera. Maybe that's why I haven't had any tickets yet!! They are legal if the car is older than 2001 - phew!
It also failed on emissions as the thing is running far too rich, but that's beside the point!
An MOT should be standard across any testing garage shouldn't it?!
Anyone know of a 'good/sympathetic' place to take it in the Hereford/Leominster area? Possibly someone who can sort out the rich running at the same time!

You can`t be forced to change the original factory spec ,My Dads Cresta goes through the mot without seat belts, but its ilegal to drive on the road without wearing them...
How the hell is this on the road ?its road legal but breaks every rule in the book..
Have you seen some of the stuff on the roads recently ,sand buggies,quads etc so how can they be so pedantic
