Whats the situation with dealers here....I can get GM dexos2 5w/30 for £40..

On the bottle it does say BMW LL-04 approved..

Can they refuse to use it as it isn't on their system?

I'm not sure as all I see is it's the right grade and its ll04 approved...

Any idea on whether I should ditch the oil or stick up for it...

The issue isn't them using customer oil or not.

The issue is them not using customer GM LL04 oil which apparently isn't on their system ( even though the oil is ll04 bmw approved)...

It does not say "BMW LL-04 approved" on the bottle, it merely includes BMW longlife-04 in a list of oil specifications that the oil meets, which is not the same thing. (The label can be viewed in the 10th post in this thread: http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&am... ).

Yes they can refuse. BMW will not use any oil that is not officially approved and on their system.

Again, it's not approved, the label is merely stating it's a BMW LL04 equivalent oil. Unless it's been tested by BMW or someone authorised by BMW then they will not accept it as an approved oil.

You can stick up for the oil all you want but how are you going to force them to use it?, the dealer is simply going to refuse to and then that will be an end to it.

Hang on.

If a manufacturer sets a standard and another maker meets that manufacturers standard, how is that not automatically manufacturer standard approved?

Because it has to go through the manufacturers official testing procedure to become officially approved.

In this case, BMW (or their official representatives), haven't tested the oil in question and so it will not be declared as an approved oil and will not appear on their system as suitable for use.

The oil could actually be superior to the standards set by BMW, but if they haven't tested it, they won't approve it.
