Door not opening!

I know it's been done to death but I'm slightly confused.

Since I've had my car (aug 08) the opening routine of my drivers door has intermittently played up. Window doesn't always drop or go back up when opening and closing and the interior light stays on. Now on more than one occasision I've had a fiddle with the switch at the bottom of the door and it's all come good. But recently it's started doing it again only this time my drivers door has decided not to open, I can hear the solenoid when I press the outside and inside button but it doesn't open.

Is this just coincidence, as the pax door still works fine! I haven't looked at the door control box as I assume it would affect both doors? Does it sound like a door latch gone wrong?

And to top it off, I had a phone call from my wife tonight (I'm at work) to say the car alarm was going off. Now I've had a brand new system fitted by Carl Baker in the last 3 weeks, so I hope nothing is wrong in that department, but am thinking that my door issues have caused a problem with the alarm. The car is in my garage and at the moment I believe the wife has disarmed it as I haven't had any messages to say it's gone off again.

Ask the wife: was the door open when she turned the alarm off. All things being equal the door should be locked tight with the alarm on but doors will spring open on their own if you have a switch problem.

Sounds like the reed switches playing up. Mine had similar, with doors deciding themselves to open or not and interior lights staying on.
It seems that pretty much everything rests on the reed switches working properly or else it all has a hissy fit.

I got Carl to replace the entire lot, alarm and all and it's been perfect since.

If the solenoid is clicking but the door is not opening then it is not due to the buttons, sensors or immobiliser. There is an adjustment on the solenoid its self.

If you search on here there were a couple of threads about it some time ago. You access the solenoid by moving aside the trim in front of the back seat and reaching in. Not having had this problem myself I am afraid I can't tell you exactly what to adjust. A search may help.

If the solenoid is not clicking then the prime suspects are corroded connectors inside the door, closely followed by reed switches and buttons.

I've had a rummage around in the hole where the solenoid lives and will have another look when i've finished work for the week. Will try giving it a clean or might just get a new one as I've seen a post about getting one from Maplins for about 8 quid.

If its clicking it is unlikely to need a new solenoid - it's just an adjustment in the actuator mechanism. A new solenoid wouldn't help in that case.
