Got a new job only a few months after buying the M3. My current job requires me to do 5k miles a year so the M3 was fine. However, the new job will be 24k miles and that will be around 6 grand a year at current prices which isn't eactly ideal! A 530d M Sport should be roughly half that so I think that's the way to go.

Any ideas on how best to get one? The dealer is offering silly money as a trade-in, but I was wondering if anyone on here has ever done a straight swap for a car before?

I did a straight swap with a dealer once. Impreza wrx for a 320d for the same reasons as you. The dealer insisted there was some cash in the deal so I ended up giving the car + £50. Not sure why they needed that but seemed adamant.

The cheapest car is the one you already own.

How do you mean? The costs I'm looking at say 6k a year in the M3 vs 3k a year on d*esel.

When you trade the M3 you'll get bummed. When you buy the 530d you will get bummed again in depreciation.

Changing cars costs money!

If you put 48k miles on an M3 in two years you'll get massively hammered on depreciation in addition to the fuel costs.

I'd consider seperating the two deals. Sell M3 privately, buy 530d private/dealer as you wish.

How many K will you lose in the exchange ?

The dealer is going to want his margin on both cars.

Private sellers allways think their car is worth more than it is.

Plenty of private M3s up for 39K when similar on BMW forecourts for 36K.

Now if you were buying at 36K you would not be slaughtering the Dealer you would think it was a very fair deal.

Porsche owners are the worse they all think their car is worth more than it was a year ago,you have to laugh.
