Yes, but the new MOT will run for 12 months from the date it passes and not be added to the existing MOT since it's outside of the ~30 days before the existing one expires.

thanks jagnet,
i thought it was still this way, car seller is flannelling son saying cant be done.
son will pay for the mot but not repairs, car seller saying bring it back in 3 months and he will pay for what needs doing on the new mot, yeah right!!!!!!.
im saying mot it now and you will buy it if not leave it or drop the price accordingly.
no big deal just a son being a bit gullible.
thanks.

Sounds like seller knows it will fail an MOT and will cost loads to sort out.

Make it a condition of sale and he'll have to put through MOT and fix. Take his option and you'll return in 3 months and he'll have all the excuses under the sun to avoid paying out.

Walk away.

laugh

You can get your car MoT'd every single day if you want to.

MoT or walk.

Run away, run away!

Unless this is a particularly unusual car, or at a particularly keen price I'd just walk. Not even worth spending out on an MOT imho - sounds like a guaranteed fail and the seller knows it.

Walk...even if the seller does put it through an MOT how do you know it's been done properly and not just by his mate down the road.

Could be dangerous or at best expensive at the next MOT.

basically i trust no one when buying cars.
the bloke is a fitter where my lad works and he is selling for his cousins (very original)car
the mot is being done next to where my lad works, whether or not this is a moody garage i dont know.
the car is a very clean bmw 318 R reg £600.
son already has one with no mot and it will cost about £300 to £500 to get one.
so its a cheapo motor that for £600 with a full mot and tax till may aint a bad buy even for one years use, but with 3 months mot i wouldnt touch it.
it is supposed to have full service history and was purchased for £1700 a few months back YEAH RIGHT!!!.
there was a few of what sounded part time dealer comments made that i got second hand from my son.
just found out the seller didnt say mot couldnt be done it was my son assumed it TUT TUT.
he hasnt quibbled about getting an mot but did want the payment for the car first "not happening"
so in some ways he seems genuine in others it seems like a bad deal, but as i say £600 for a year is an ok deal hopefully

As above. Walk away and don't look back.
There are thousands of cars for sale out there. You can afford to be choosey.

There are also thousands of MoT testing stations (well, you know what I mean...). Mebbe arrange to get the car tested at an MoT place of your choosing (i.e. one that you trust) and not the 'place next door' (which you cleaarly have doubts about, quite possibly with justification)???

You might be pleasantly surprised! smile

Or just run away and look elsewhere smile .

thanks for all the advice guys.
the car was MOTed today and failed on a ball joint, this is being renewed today and will be restested tomorrow.
i asked around and the mot station is fairly strict from what i can gather, there are a few here that you can still get moody ones.
many years ago i used to deal in salvage and the repairs of them so although ive been out of the loop for 20 years im not totally green about cars, although i was more of a silent partner rather than hands on, i also moved out of that part of the country (essex) 10 years back so i dont really know people in the trade where i live now.
id been under impression that dodgy mots were hard to come by now but it seems not.
im not happy that he is buying this motor but what do you do, at least he should get a year out of it.
does anyone know what the scrap or breaker value is of a 98 318 bmw as he has another one stuck outside with no mot and needing a fair bit of work to get it through one.

Best way is always get the MOT history - full list of every advisory the car has ever had - just need the log book number:

To go against the flow, I don't think the seller was being unreasonable. He was selling a £600 car with 3 months MOT, was willing to put a new MOT on it but wanted to ensure the sale was genuine first?

thanks for that, i didnt know that was possible, so maybe i can tell if its been clocked from there can i, it is supposed to have 70k on the clock.
that said im now assuming any clocking would be picked up on a yearly basis.
it does come with a full service history which is good ish but once again it might not mean zip really.
