A mate of mine hasn't been driving for nearly 3 years now so hasn't had any car insurance. However he did have 10 years NCD prior to the 3 years. He's hit a problem, he now wants to insure a car again but the insurer is telling him that the 10 years NCD are no good as they are not valid unless used within two years.

Is he up the creek without a paddle?

without any claims on record in that time period there isnt a huge difference on the price's he'll be quoted. ie i have 7 years on 1 car for £450. i did a quote assuming no ncd and it was £599. hardly bursting the bank.

He has done the same as you, a quote with and a quote without. There was a difference of over £500. I guess it all depends on the address, car, engine size etc etc.

Has he been using a company car in the missing years, or has he been out of the country or just not had a car?

If he's had a company car he should be able to get NCD from their insurers. If out of the country did he have a car when away?

I think he is stuffed, I too have done quotes with 7yrs ncb and without. Without was about £500 more, this is on a 1.2 corsa: £285 with ncd and £800 without. I had a friend in a similar position and he was told 2 yrs of not using NCB and you lose it all.

Has he tried going back to the insurer he was last with ? My wife was lucky , had full NCD with Churchill, had company car 4 years, back to own and she was only offered insurance based on 4 years NCD of company car. Churchill however honoured the full NCD and were hence best price

There are some insurers that will allow NCB for upto 3 years old.

If you call around though and explain to some of the insurers (not brokers) then they may speak to the underwriters and get them to mirror the NCD your freind used to have- so you retain the discount. Proof may still be needed though and this is still dependent upon his criteria e.g lives in a low risk area, parks in garage
