About 10 days ago I set off for my early morning 3-4 mile jog. Travelled about 100 yards and got this burning pain in my right calf. Literally had to limp back to base. Had some difficulty walking until late afternoon when I could manage to walk but with some minor discomfort. Stairs were not too clever.

I stayed off the running, saw a physio for some massaging who confirmed it was knotted and slightly inflamed up the 'central core' between the two muscles (my terminology not theirs). The suggestion was to hold off running for 7-10 days and keep stretching it with the normal R I C E healing process.

Well I gave it a week and set off for a slowish jog. There was some minor irritation but I thought this was just minor. Anyway completed about 1.5 miles and got the sharp pain back again. What is unusual there is no build up it just comes full on. Limped home. Now I'm back to laying up wondering when it is going to be resolved. It doesn't look swollen just tender to pressure (oh err matron).

Problem is I have a running competition/testing in a couple of weeks and need to pass it. Any tips on how I can speed up the healing process? Have another physio session booked later this week. Also would those aerobic machines be any good so that my fitness does not taper off?

In over 15yrs of running I have never had a single problem and end up with this at the wrong bloody time!
