After reading how one of the lads on the E38 forums had 2 lads attempt to rob him of his 5D MK11 in the street today, I suddenly remembered I don't have insurance for mine and if it was to happen to me I simply couldn't afford to replace it.

So, what companies do people recommend? I will have about £2k worth of gear to cover.

I’ve just covered mine through my home/contents insurance (Liverpool Victoria). £3500 worth for £20 extra, named camera, lens, filters ect., addition to the policy.

Mines through the household policy as well, before that I was covered by Towergate as you really have to watch some of the exclusion clauses with regards vehicle coverage (not that I'd leave it in the boot often or for any period of time).

Cheers guys, home insurance is up for renewal next month so I will include that into my search.

I've got about £6k insured new for old with Photoguard (£20k new replacement) for about £200 p/a, they seem good although luckily I've not had to claim.

Included in that I've got in-vehicle cover, worldwide cover and £1m public liability.

Ouch. You say attempted. Did they fail then?

Yes they failed, he had it round his neck and shoulder and felt someone tugging on it, turned round to face 2 men in their 20's with one holding the camera and shouting "give me the camera".
He instinctly swung for the guy, just caught him by the mouth but it was enough for him to let go and they ran.
He has an uprated strap in too, one that connects to where the tripod screws in so he thinks that helped too.

In answer to your original question, my camera is also insured by home insurance.

I've always thought a 1 series upside the head would put off most potential thieves. I heard of one lad who someone tried to rob of all his kit, he swung his camera at the thief and the quick release plate on the bottom caught him in the forehead bringing him down like a sack of spuds

Reminds me of the report I read of an old Lady who was mugged for her handbag whilst walking through a park one day. In this instance the scumbag managed to steal the handbag, but can you just imagine his face when he looked inside to find he'd ripped off a handbag containing nothing but dogst as the old girl felt it was more dignified than using a plastic carrier bag when her Pomeranian poo'd on the grass.

God I bet that hurt, and probably split him open like a sausage
