Illegal Jaguar Leaper on Bonnet

Hi!
Apparently I am a criminal and a danger to society 'cos I've got a Jaguar on the front of my erm.. Jaguar
Whilst I accept the argument that this could harm someone if I knocked them on to my bonnet, I also think it is of complete insignificance is the scheme of things and that the Police should be enforcing things that are actually more important.
Anyway, my question to PHers is - I got a £30 fine (no points etc) - it will cost me £200+ to have the leaper removed, holes filled, bonnet painted etc - can I just accept that getting fined £30 every few months as a running cost, or if I don't remove it, will they charge me with something else and put me in prison or something?

Eh? Was the Jaguar standard fit for your car? Or was it fitted by yourself later on?
If it is standard (thinking old S type or Mk2 here) then they can take a running jump for some jumped up Plod to tell you that you have to remove it. However, if the model in question didnt have one as standard then I am afraid that there are some guidelines as to what can be fitted where (thinking XJ40 here).

I was under the impression that these were OK if the car was original manufactured with them on the bonnet. I've been known to be wrong though - on many occassions.

Nylon nuts on a Jaguar - the poor creature!

I think Jaguar stopped fitting them in 1970s - during the oil crisis, Jaguars were seen as BAD and the Daily Mail printed a picture of a Robin impaled on a leaper to the shock of the country LOL!!
I fitted mine to my '92 XJS (got a tuned EVO IV as bell BTW forever_driving
) and it looks really Cool and all my patients (elderly with dementia, depression etc) go ooh, that's nice and little birds perch on it 'cos it's nice and shiny etc, so I think it is doing GOOD for society
Anyway, apparently there is an EU approved "Knock Off" Jaguar leaper, but the one I have is fixed.
Any ideas what might happen if I keep it on and am stopped again? Am not keen to follow trivial laws if possible

Take it off , imagine how you will feel if it ends up stuck in the side of someones head .
It does not look cool on a 92 XJS , even Angelina Jolie would not look cool on a 92 XJS

As a pedestrian, I would be more worried about the rest of the grill, bonnet and, more significantly, my head going through, then out of the windscreen. How many injuries have resulted from this anyway?
Perhaps the police should be concentrating on preventing the absolute cause of this kind of accident: stopping people walking out in front of moving vehicles.

Fair point - one of the officers said I could face criminal charges if I did skewer somebody with it...
But - the chance of this happening are very very low, so I don't think it is a big enough issue for the Police to be spending their time enforcing?
Edit - good point supraman - where I live, pedestrians deliberately walk slowly out in fron of cars because they have "an equal right to cross the road"

The only "approved" one is the one with nylon fixing nuts, and are available through the Jag specialists who advertise here (can't think of the name....green summat?), any others could cost you!!!
Or you could modify yours so that they rip off...and the scallys can then collect it!
Strewth, in all my years I have never heard of someone being given a fixed penalty for that....

You were lucky that he chose the £30 option and not the Dangerous Parts/condition endorsable option.
Vehicles are not allowed to have anything protruding that is likley to cause injury unless it has gone through type approval when the vehicle is designed. This caters for things like Merc badges and silver ladies on Rolls Royce which collapse when touched.
You must take the thing off as it does not meet with type approval and therefore is within the scope of Dangerous Condition legislation. The very same legislation that will get you if you drive around with a damaged wing exposing sharp edges after an RTC.
By the way, If you happen to drive around Slough, would you consider fitting the car with a lance instead of the Jaguar? it will be much more appropriate

This kind of thing really amuses me. Owning a Se7en style kitcar which I put through SVA test (like a really through 3 hour MOT) meant I learnt a lot about the rules and regs.
The test says that anything that can be touched by 70mm sphere (supposed to represent a knee-cap) has to be radiused to 2.5mm. My car has open front wheels which means all the suspension is exposed and hence all edges have to have this radius. Personally if anyone's planning a trip through my suspension, I think the last thing they'd be worried about is the odd sharp edge!
Also, there's no mention about the red hot exhaust sticking out the side, as long as it's radiused! I asked the tester about this and he confirmed that, in theory I could have a 3 foot bar out the side as long as it's radiused! Nuts I tell you!
