Hi Guys

I'm a long term BMW owner (have had 328i sport, e46 M3, E92 chipped 335i, E60 M6 and now also have an E53 X5) but have had a 996 turbo for the past year. I'm 90% sure I'm going to swap it out for a E92 M3 as I'm sick of the hard ride and lack of practicality.

Just looking for any opinions of anyone who's done a similar change

Depends upon yor needs. I went from an E46 M3 to 996t and it does everything I need plus goes better. After driving an E92 M3 last week for the first time it at best would be a step side ways.

996tt was my next up grade but not going to happen now. The bm is a good car but think I would mis the power and exclusivity of the pork. I'm missing my bm like mad after having to down grade

Don't worry lads this is going around and around in my head.

At the moment I feel the porsche is too hard for my local roads and personally I fancy something a bit more modern with some more toys in it. It's not quite practical enough and it's out of warranty.

On the other side I've got one of the best condition 996 turbo's around with impeccable history and I think I'm going to lose a fortune on it. At speed the car is amazing and I don't think there is much out there that would beat it.

And on the other side of that - unless you are will to nearly kill yourself/drive like Michael schumacher then a vectra will keep up with you on a normal road. ie on a motorway you may be able to lose him from a roundabout but if you cruise at 100 and he is willing to cruise at 110 he will still catch you. I know the M3 will be the same so why should I not enjoy a bit more luxury that the turbo gives.

I am going to loose a fortune but the way I am looking at it is I will sell cheap (compared to what I paid) but then E92s have dropped too so I am only looking at cost to change price.

4 to 5 K to change from one 420 bhp 4 seater 10 year old car to another 414 bhp 4 seater coupe with adjustable ride comfort and more usable room but is only 4 years old.

Plus I also have the ongoing addiction of changing my car roughly every year.

Please dont mention the hike in road tax and fuel consumption though wink

Can't afford ether but if it was me I would keep the 996 and maybe put a couple of choice upgrades on it (remap, exhaust etc) and get something as a daily driver like an E39 M5. You say yourself that the Porsche is one of the best so keep it or you might regret it.

Tiny flat boot in the M3, no torque (compared to the TT), but a sweet balanced chassis and driftability. I think you should try one and tell us what you think. We were put off buying one for the Mrs. by the boot size. Touring is definitely tempting though, if it happens.

The porsche actually does have a cargraphic exhaust on it so been there done that. It's fast enough already too. The main problem is just that the ride has changed.

The bigger news now is that due to a change in the other halfs jobs means we are moving for a year so I cannot justify having the two cars. We'll be renting a house so no need for the X5 with it's towbar and room for going to B&Q so it's definately going to be the M5.

The 911 is too nice for a daily driver and just not practical enough to be my only motor (not including her Honda jazz), I'd also be piling on too many miles so it's definately got to go now. Not going to leave it for a year in my garage either, porsches are there to be used!

I'm sad but at least external forces have made the decision. Time to find a nice E92 M3 then!

I had a M5 then to a 996 targa then 996tt crashed that and got another 996tt then LR G4 defender then 335i The crashing the 996tt knocked the need for speed out of my system and I went for fun cars. as you said the 996tt has a hard ride and I crashed it as I was going too fast and went fast everywhere becasue I had a 996tt. Went for the G4 defender and smiled for 4 years loved the styel of driving and grin it put back on my face. Id rediscovered the fun of driving not just geoing faster and faster, then got the 335i cab again for the fun of it and again 3 yrs on still enjoying it. |Enough power to overtake and have some fun, cab for the sun and smiling all the time.

Its an arms race when you get faster and faster cars - often you over look the fun you can have in 'lesser' cars. The g4 was a classic example slow, noisy but so much fun. 335i sure not a m3 but not that far off for real world driving safely.

Ive never regretted sellignmy 996tt the only regret was leaving the 996 targa and getting the tt as the 'fun' factor went for me.
