Cyclist knocked off and cars drive round him
Discussion
I couldnt beleive it last night. Driving through Guildford in rush hour, coming up to the roundabout by the police station, there are three lanes and I just happened to glimpse between the lanes of traffic, a cyclist laying in the middle lane in a heap with his bike. Cars in front were just going left or right to go around him. I stopped in front of him with my hazzard warning lights on to protect him. I got out helped him up and a pedestrian came over to help. He seemed ok, so we got him to the side of the road with his bike. By them my car is in the middle lane with cars now going around it, so I had to leave him with the pedestrian. I hope he is ok.
I didnt actually see what happend, so couldnt assist further.
I could not beleive, people were just driving around him ! At this point many people are changing lane and I could visualise somme one looking over there shoulder and driving right over him.
How can people just drive around someone laying in the road. !
Unbelievable !

It's drivers offering the bloke the courtesy of not driving over him !
Some are workshop, some don't know what to do, some pretend to have not seen.
I would always stop and try to help as I know what I would feel like later if I didn't.
When I fell off a guy stopped and asked if I needed any help but I was ok, though a lot say they are when they aren't due to shock or not wanting any fuss.

i had this in Wolverhampton a guy try'd to get across the road on is bike to beat the cars but a guy in a van just drove into the guy on the bike at 30 ish mph the guy on the bike was in a mess so i stopped .and now i wish i had not due to i had to go to court 7 times as a witness ..
i was self-employed and all i could claim back at the time was my travel so this maybe why no one wants to stop some people just don't want to get involved.
another 1..
a friends wife got out the car to help a guy that looked like he had been hit by a car when she got out to help some other guy jumped in her car and drove off when she ran back to try and stop the guy in her car the guy on the floor ran off so she as no car and her insurance will not pay out due to she left the car running ...

Sounds much like the morons I encountered sat in their cars, hitting horns behind a guy who's car had broken down in a dip under a railway bridge. No way on earth one chap could have pushed the car out the way, 3 or 4 would have had no problem. It took me getting out of my car about 6 cars back, knock on windows of said cars and say "well are you going to help?" to get him moved.Unbelievable !
When I got knocked off my bike no-one stopped. I was pretty obviously OK, though (aside from a limp), as I stood up fairly quickly to get the me and bike out of people's way. Would have been nice if someone had at least wound down a window to let me know they witnessed it/had the car's reg number or something. They all drove on looking firmly straight ahead.
This is the behavior of selfish people who think that 'making progress' is a right which should be afforded to them irrespective of the road conditions or traffic and that it is not their responsibility to help someone they can see needs assistance if it holds them up. What could be more important than saving time eh! I think partly that it was a cyclist who needed help was a reason people would not stop, can you imaging the same happening if it was an elderly person, pregnant woman or a child who'd fallen over.
You did a good deed there and it would have been appreciated, it's refreshing to hear stories where individuals like you instinctively do the right thing.

I fell off my motorbike many years ago coming up to a roundabout (young, inexperienced) and after picking myself up...all I had was drivers winding down the window calling me a 'c..t' for falling off.
Not a scrap of sympathy...(it was my own fault, but never the less..)
Not my finest hour...nor for the knobs that drove past me in Milton Keynes either...

As an owner of several cars and bikes, I would have stopped to at least get the rider out of the road....it's just obvious isn't it?
I don't own a single bike, am very concerned about the way i see many riders handle themseleves in the finest PH way but there is no way i would have just driven round the poor sod.One day it could be me or someone I cared about in the road.

A lady on a pretty big sports tourer fell of at walking place in-front of my car a while back. I checked she was ok, just a little shaken up and gutted about the fairing, I was surprised at the weight of the bike as I hauled it back up for her, I doubt she'd got it back up herself. I cannot understand why anyone wouldn't help someone else who'd been involved in a fall or accident and would rather sit their giving verbal abuse etc. I garuntee that those types of people, especially who are happy to gesticulate and use abusive language, would be the first holding their hands out to expect help if they were in the same position. Not a scrap of sympathy...(it was my own fault, but never the less..)

They're a lot heaver than your expecting them to be. In the summer I was in a queue at Eurotunnel, an older couple on a touring bike fell over a couple of rows accross and about 5 cars in front. Only me and one of the Eurotunnel staff went over to help them lift it back up (no way thet'd have managed alone) not one other person got out of their cars to help, and they weren't even moving
I was early on the scene to a serious motorcycle accident (that turned out to be fatal) and people who witnessed it happen but were held up by it were getting irate.
One woman honked on her horn and leaned out of her window and then shouted "Can you move him onto the pavement please? I need to get my son to tennis."
Not "Would you like my details as a witness?". Not "Is there anything I can do to help?".
6 years later and I still am seething at her diabolical attitude.

king fuming sat here after reading that. Why couldn't at least one of them have gone over him and make sure there's one less for the commute for everyone?
