Ive currently got one last payment on my 10 month payment plan for my years insurance on one of my cars. Im only keeping it to get my years ncb which I will be due to get in Feb. I got 3 points on my licence a few days ago and just checked online, it says that if I tell them about it, I will owe an additional £310, making my last payment not £110 but £420. I really cant afford this as Im moving house and need a big deposit by the end of the month, on top of paying my fine for the points of £175 and insurance on my other car £173.

Im not driving the other car whatsoever, only reason Im keeping and paying the insurance is so I can get my ncb. If I dont tell them, will they know and effectively not give me my NCB in Feb? Have they got a way of finding out? I know not declaring would make my insurance void if I was to have an accident but thats very unlikely unless someone drives into it, then it would be their insruance that would get claimed upon.

Opinions?

I wouldn't advocate anything other than complete honesty with your insurer, however, in this situation, if the car really isn't being driven, I'd probably keep schtum.
(a decent QC could probably argue that the points on your licenece are only material to the insurance policy if you are actually driving the car)

Will you really be saving money by acrueing that years ncb? I'd of thought you'd end up paying more for the insurance than any discount you'll get as a result of the ncb.

3 points means you will owe them £310??! WTF! The only time I have ever had points the insurers didn't give a toss. No wonder so many don't bother with insurance full stop if a simple mistake means getting bent over like this.

Most insurers don't need to know about points until the renewal thus won't affect your current premium, check your policy booklet and see what it says.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Ill definitely check about the points bumf in policy T&C!

I wouldnt have thought it would be likely that they would not give me my NCB for not declaring points, I wouldnt be staying with that insurance company anyway so wouldnt affect them anyway.

Well NCB will save me about £65 a month on my other car, declaring points will add tenner a month to that one and £313 one off payment to other insurer for other car. So think it works out that it would save me in long run. How can addding 3 points cost £313 for the 3 months left on it though? £100 a month extra??

Plus there's the cumulative benefit; every year upon renewal time, you'll have that additional years NCB in your favour.

Exactly, either way I need this NCB. Think Ill just declare to the insurance company of the car I actually drive, tbh though that void anyway as the car had an exhaust and wheels sprayed when I bought it and I havent declared them. Insurance is a joke, owning a car you really do get raped for it in every way possible, petrol, insurance, the list goes on..

I had a different set of lights fitted to a car I had.
6 months left on the insurance, declared it to insurer something like £60 increase in the premium to change - fair(-ish) enough.

After 1 month, I removed the lights and put the car back to standard), told the insurer, and was expecting around £50 refund (perhaps minus £10 "Admin" charge perhaps).

They rebated £2.50 or thereabouts.
Insurance companies are robbing b*stards.

Pretty sure you only tell them on renewal time and they adjust it accordingly.

I wouldn't tell an insurance company mid-term about any points that I get and I haven't heard of people doing this.

Infact I put off paying a fine so I could squeeze my last insurance through before the points came onto my licence, so when they asked me 'Do you have any points?' the honest answer was 'No', they haven't asked me since so I haven't lied to them.

I'd say this is to be honest.

I thought you were judged when the insurance was started so any points shouldn't affect you until renewal time swings around. Really not wanting to find out though! A grand for insurance is plenty at the moment!

Depends on the question and the insurer,

Insurers also ask for "pending convictions" i.e. if you've received a NIP.

But you have (potentially) withheld material information.

I'm pretty certain that gaining points mid-term through a policy should not affect your insurance premium, unless you have topped up your points to 12 or 6 and lose your licence. Some insurers do require you to tell them at the pont of picking up the conviction- just so they can note it for when they send your renwal out- but this should not affect the premium you are currently paying. Your insurer should carry on insuring you on the same terms you set your policy up at inception.

The most you should really pay (if anything) is an administration charge for them to update your current insurance schedule- but as commented previously it does depend upon your insurer/broker.

I would not say anything assuming that price is genuine (ie you didnt work it out using similar quotes as insurance has increased a lot recently).

On this basis you will not be using the car hopefully no issue will arise. In the event that I did, all you would need to accept is that they might try to worm their way out of paying.

I would suggest your premium is based on risk ie the possibility you will have an accident etc etc and to assess that risjk they look at points and pending matters at the time you take out the policy so any points within the policy are now only relevant to calculating the next year's policy premium. On your reasoning, if you had an accident, they would be entitled to increase the premium when you had one on the basis you were now an increased risk .... see how that doesn't work?
