Hi all

It's time to buy my first torque wrench for the GT40 replica build. After doing some research I've decided to go for Halfords professinal. From what I've heard they are brilliant for the money, very accurate and also come with a lifetime warranty like snap on tools.

The problem I have is that the torque ranges I'll be using for the build vary from 22ft/ibs right up to 200ft/ibs so I actually need 2 torque wrenchs.

Halfords professinal torque wrench 40 to 200Nm (30 to 150 lbf.ft)
Halfords professinal torque wrench 8 to 60Nm (6-45 lbf.ft)

That's fine, I am happy to buy both as I am sure they will be very handy. The main issue I have is over socket sets. I have an asortment of metric and imperial bolts used in the build. Also the halfords torque wrenches have differnent size drives (3/8" for the smaller wrench and 1/2" for the bigger wrench).

My question is - what should I buy?

a) A nice 3/8" socket set (metric and imperial sizes) and an 1/2" socket adapter

b) A nice 1/2" socket set (metric and imperial sizes) and a 3/8" adapter

c) Two socket sets 3/8" and 1/2"

I don't really want to have to buy 2 socket sets but if it will effect torque settings then I guess I'll have to but what would you guys advise

Thanks

Halfords gear is as good as it gets for the money and the guarantee is eaqual to any body else on the market .Seven years ago the wife bought me a kit from Halfords ,1/4 3/8 and 1/2 drive socket sets spanners from 8 to 19 mm, m+f torx ,allen drives ,extentions in 3 sizes 100quid fantastic .Torque wrenches I would advise 2, 1 3/8 and 1 1/2 drive will cover 99%of stuff you 'll ever want, the rest is upto the depth of your pocket and actual need .I have been on the tools nearly 50 years and use this kit far more than my my 20+ draw main kit, only using things from it like 3/4 drive socket/ratchet combo's for rear hub nuts and scrapers ,taps and dies etc HTH

I've got a 3/8 and 1/4 drive halfords set. I use the 3/8 for for virtually everything, I think the 1/4 drive I've only used for 8mm sockets on one part.
Torque wrench and a couple of breaker bars are 1/2 inch drive - I've just bought a few 1/2 drive sockets in the sizes I need (19mm, 3/4", 24mm and 32mm IIRC), and use a 1/2 - 3/8 adaptor for the rest.

Obviously a full set of everything'd be best, but failing that, I'd go for option a)

I've got their £99 (always on sale) set and found it very good for the money.

Only mistake I made was buying a cheap 1/2 - 3/8 adaptor off eBay - seemed to be made of cheese.

I went with a Draper torque wrench off Amazon, much cheaper than Halford and was a better range of settings for my needs - as you say the Halfords ranges always mean you need 2 on most cars.
