I've just bought a car from a dealers.
A BMW. For £20k

I test drove it when it first arrived before it was prepped.
A wheel was dinged, the interior was dusty, the bumper had a scratch, some interior trim was broken.

When I picked it up this was ALL fixed.
All 4 wheels had been refurbed.
The interior fully fixed and scotchguarded.
The bumper had been removed, fixed and respayed.
They had checked the full service history on their system to make sure it wasn't fake stamped.
It came with a 12 month warranty, 12 months MOT, every serviceable item had been serviced.

I might have been able to get the car a few K cheaper privately.
But, it would have probably just had a Polish polish from the local car cleaners and no warranty or service.

It's made me think that it's worth paying a premium for a car from a dealer.
Especially if the car is under 5 years old.
The extra stuff you receive from the dealer is worth the extra money.

What do you think?

From that particular dealer, perhaps. Others might not be so scrupulous.

Obviously it depends on how you value those extra things they've done for you. If you could have got the same car for £17k, then I imagine you could have fixed the little niggles for about £1k and a bit of your own time?

I can see how it's attractive though.

I suppose the question is the difference between how much the car will worth privately and from a dealer. And whether those above mentioned things could be done for that amount.

I think at the lower end of the market, perhaps not.

However, its the hassle factor of that work being carried out, the liklihood of you actually having it done, the comeback if it turns out to be stter etc

From what you have said it would seem better to buy from a dealer.

Although you WILL pay a premium for this, its just is it worth it for you

Similar experience with a recent Mercedes Benz. Some private sellers were away with the fairies sperm

I think that have paid £1-2K over best private deal that I could have struck but have the warranty/breakdown/HPI/etc peace of mind of franchised dealer.

Oh the other thing.....when I go in with £4K below sticker price, the dealer does not think that I have stolen and devoured their first born but takes it as a opening gambit for negotiation biglaugh
