this post is more for a friend than me, but he's looking into buying another car and wants some advice.

he doesn't have a massive amount to spend (£2500) and is looking for something fun and rewarding to drive.

he is only 21 so it cannot be a jap turbo or similar, unless there are ones which are insurance friendly?

his current car is a 106 gti, and I don't think he would be after another French hatch! he has spent too much repairing his and i think its put him off them, no matter how fun they are,

so, the question is, what else is good for the money which will put just as much of a smile on his face? iv suggested a mazda mx-5, vauxhall chevette (c20xe), and ek9 civics

kind regards

You can buy any car you want for that money and it's the way you drive that makes it fun not the specification.

I have more fun in my £500 Rover 213S than I did in my £5,000 WRX. driving

It's driver attitude that counts not autoegotism.

i suggested an e30 too! he wants a fun car just with abit more status than his french hatch,

i know what your saying about what makes a car fun etc, but like i said, he wants more of a drivers car over something like a C-max! bit extreme but you get my point wink

what are 200sx's like to insure at his age?

I had an S13 when I was 22 (ten years ago) it was £683 Fully Comp' with £300 excess. Nowerdays think of a number and quadruple and charge VAT it how insurance gets worked out.

unfortunately he must have been dropped on the head when he was a child, when i mentioned the chevette to him, he turned up his nose because it was older, he assumes older cars = less cool and un-reliability, iv tried to change his mind with my chevette when i had it, no matter how fun it was he wasnt interested, he doesnt like to get his hands dirty!

You need to let me in on your secret insurer. I was curious about a tubby MR2 and was looking at £2000+ at 21 with 3NCB.

Here's a few options I'd consider with the cash...

Toyota Soarer:

2.5 Twin Turbo, not many driven by youngsters so might surprise you with insurance.

Honda Prelude:

Reasonably quick and reliable, there are cheaper ones available.

Slight budget stretch but I've renewed my insurance at the same age for £1100.

Mitsubishi Starion:

Mazda MX3 (With new wheels!)

Smallets production V6 would make for a nice smooth drive

Just a few left-field options he may have not already considered.

If he's not insecure about his sexuality (he will get ribbed by his mates in "Men's cars" - like Astras biggrin) what about a Ford Puma.

The 1.7 is decently quick and on the road much more than the bare figures suggest.

Cheap as chips to repair and not too horrible on insurance...
