BMW tops the two million mark in the UK

The September registration plate change marked a significant milestone in the history of BMW. Just over 31 years after BMW UK Ltd sold its first vehicle, the best-selling premium marque in the UK has now surpassed the two millionth car mark.

The first car sold on 1 January, 1980 was an E12 5 Series Saloon. Move forward 1,999,999 cars later and the proud owner of a BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo has taken delivery of the extra special BMW car.

Ken Haynes, from Wolverhampton, said: “I’m delighted to find out I’m the two million man for BMW. The BMW 530d Gran Turismo is the perfect car for me as I like the space, versatility and high standard specification. I run an engineering business under my own name and being able to have a luxury car that allows for large items in the boot is the perfect combination.”

Steve Mills, Dealer Principal at Benham BMW, said: “Ken’s been a delight to deal with and is just the sort of person who buys a BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo; he’s someone who used to drive Mercedes and lately was in a Volkswagen Phaeton, but has now moved to BMW. Clearly BMW products are the way forward for the Haynes household, as a MINI Countryman also sits on the drive.”

The BMW 5 Series range has been one of the most popular cars in the history of BMW, selling 5,839,866 worldwide since its launch. The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo has also proved popular with the discerning buyer looking for something more unique. Since the model was introduced in the UK at the end of 2009, nearly 2,500 models have been sold with the 530d GT proving the most popular.
The 2 millionth car sold in the UK, and its a Fecking 5GT!!!!

I was just thinking today how common a BMW 3 series has become compared to say, a Ford Mondeo

I think for a fleet they work out cheaper due to lower Co2 emissions.

I take it his engineering business is not involved in the manufacture of spectacles or contact lenses or anything of that nature.

Translation;

"Ken's a right idiot, his merc probably wasn't too bad, but even worse, is that he ditched the Phaeton for this heap of ste we've had on the forcourt for months!

Clearly Ken doesnt understand anything about cars, and this is further supported by the MINI countryman sat on his drive."

Always a pleasure, Ken.

There has been some crafty shuffling and favour-calling-in going on somewhere here. The chances of the magic car being a 5GT are very, very low.

Scene: an office, somewhere in Bracknell.

"oh, by the way, we're nearly at 2 million cars you know..."

"really? Wow, finally a reason to do a press release about this fking dog of a car I've been charged with marketing, give me the focus and I'll make the tea for a week, and get the first round in whichever plastic pub we go to on friday lunchtime."

"hmm, do me a gloopy treacle testimonial on my linkedin page, and you've got a deal."

Bit weird. My step dad worked for a BMW dealer in Thames Ditton in 1972. Wonder why the first wasn't sold until 1980? Perhaps BMW UK was set up then...Who knows!

The 3 series started to outsell the Mondeo a few years ago, the Ford is now the niche exclusive choice. The world has gone topsy turvey.

I was thinking the other day that things like BMW and Mercedes used to be the preserve of the rich but these cars are very accessible now and things like BMW's just arent exclusive cars anymore.

I find that all the widely avaliable merc's and beamers are all in peasant spec. The 3 series ES with it's rollerskate wheels looks like a total joke.

The C Class Sport and M Sport are still a fair bit of cash for a decent one.

Are you sure it wasn't a BMW importer rather than an actual dealer? I imagine there were a number of places selling them unofficially.
