New Journo Course

Coventry Uni to offer post-grad Car Journalism course

Coventry University School of Art and Design has launched a new postgraduate programme in Specialist Journalism. The programme has two main routes, in Automotive Journalism and International Media Journalism.

The MA in Automotive Journalism is the first in the world. It will be jointly delivered by staff from Coventry's internationally Transport Design and Communication, Media and Culture teams. In addition to the sound grounding in journalism at the core of the programme, students will benefit from specialist automotive industry input and expert guidance from journalists practicing in the field.

Autocar's editor-in-chief, Steve Cropley says: "I'm convinced this course will greatly improve the skills of aspiring motoring journalists. It may well become the best-recognised route into our craft. The course is bound to be challenging, but I'm especially pleased that there will be such a close association between aspiring motoring journalists and Coventry's existing Transport Design and Media students, who already set very high standards in their fields ."

The course will be available in full and part time modes. Applications are now being sought from candidates with a good undergraduate degree in journalism or in an arts, humanities or social sciences subject where they can demonstrate an ability to write proper.

That looks right up my alley. Anybody know if this is the only UK university to offer a course such as this? Better yet, know if any schools on the continent offer something similar, since I've been planning to do post graduate studies in Germany.

Coventry's such a bad place to be? I've only ever been to London in the UK and for brief visits at that, so I've little knowledge of how the different cities measure up.

I do however notice that the beer scene doesn't seem to be too strong in Coventry, which is a pity...

Coventy is an utter shithole. The motor museum is probably the only reason for going anywhere near it - can't think of any other redeming features.

This is all exactly what I've been looking for..!! apart from needing a degree in arts/journalism (and coventry being crap).



I've just finished a Computer Systems Engineering Masters degree at Bristol, will this count would you think? Given that many applicants may have degress in silly subjects from silly universities?

I really can't see how relevant your degree would be to that course. Still, to my mind, getting varied education can be quite a good idea. I'm studying for a BA degree in history and much of the teachers and students are hard pressed to switch on a VCR.

Are good motoring journo's born or made?

I reckon it's in the blood.

I am worried that while this course might make for a better standard of applicant to the average motoring journalist role, my bet is that there will be a lot of embittered grads from this course who will not get a job? They would have been better off training as plumbers, and could then afford to swan around in their own tasty motors!
