What are they like?

I’m looking to buy a family car for around the 5k mark and they come up in the searches. It looks like you can get an 08 model with low miles for around 5k which looks like a bit of a bargain to me.

I like the styling of them and the 1.4 turbo petrol engine would be my choice but was wondering about reliability?

My housemate had a 57 plate 150bhp Sport Diesel. He bought it as a company car nearly new in 2008 and ran it till he left the job in 2010.

In that time he covered almost 78k miles in it, with not a single problem! I was insured on it as well and spent a lot of time driving it. The 'Blue&Me' bluetooth is excellent, the level of kit was impressive for the price, and the interior was a very nice place to be. The lower models may be a bit blander, so I'd try and get a sport if you can.

I found it very good to drive, quick, frugal and a decent handler. We did loads of roadtrips in it, from London to Aberdeen in one go just stopping for fuel, and the swiss alps etc.

Really couldnt fault it and I'd have one myself.

Only issue I had actually, was that the pillars are ridiculously big, but it is a 5* NCAP car.

Thanks for that.

I was looking at the 1.4 T-jet sport which I think have 150hp so I guess will be fairly brisk. They are ridiculously cheap to insure for me and the mrs and you don’t see that many around which is a bonus.

I might have to get a test drive.

Tried one a couple of years ago back to back with a Mk 2 Focus. Steering lighter and feel not as good. Interior felt more up to date than the Focus and was a nice place to be. I was disappointed with the Rear legroom. With the seat back where I have it I found virtually none for the back seat passenger which given the structure comes from the Stilo is a bit puzzling. The Stilo was a spacious car even if it looked like a bus!!!

Had a brief drive of a mates the other day...I say drive, it was 100 yards tongue out
I couldnt get over how light and electronically assisted everything was! The engine was so quiet I didnt know it was on, genuinely and the clutch and steering are light as a feather. This may be due to my daily drive being a 20 year old mx5 however

Also on the list are an 05 Civic Type S and an 06 Focus 2.0 Titanium. Only problem is they are a bit older than the Bravo with more mileage so may need a bit more maintenance and that in theory would even up the extra depreciation the Bravo may suffer.

The magazine reviews don’t really seem to like the Bravo but I think it’s worth a look. I like the styling of it and the owner’s reviews are mostly positive.

Both me and my mate found it infinitely better inside than the Focus, but that was mainly due to driving position and I hate the focus interior.

I find the Civic incredibly bland too but thats personal preference! I'd say its definitely worth a look, exp at this price and miles!

I like the Focus and Civic but agree the interiors are a bit dull and the older models are starting to look a little dated.

I saw that one on Autotrader too, seems incredibly good value! I’m hoping to test drive a 57 plate Maranello red one at the weekend which is up for £5750.

Nice! Surely worth haggling to £4K with a year's tax & MOT?
