Hello all smile

As part of my medical course I have to develop a portfolio about teaching. The idea is that all doctors have to teach, and therefore the GMC want us to become better teachers.

The main part of the project is to create a learning resource and also teach a five-minute session to a group of peers and doctors. These can be on anything at all, ideally NOT medical, and in the past have included 'how to play the air guitar' (not sure how they filled that out to five minutes!) and 'how to cook a killer Lamb Balti'.

Anyway, I would like to do something car-related, as I don't often get the chance to combine cars and medicine smile. For the resource I'm thinking of a short video on basic car maintenance - for example checking oil, water and changing a tyre. I've had noises that this would be a good idea, particularly from the girls who on the whole are clueless about those kinds of things, but would like to feel safe in the knowledge they could change a tyre if stranded.

Other ideas I've had are; how to wash a car (oh, the possibilities for a video...), how to drive safely in ice and snow (a big problem down here in Cornwall), how to sound like a car expert in the pub...yes, I could do with some more decent ideas!

I'd really appreciate some more ideas for a teaching session or for the video...anything car related really that could fit into a five minute teach or a five minute video. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks smile

Basic car maintenance I reckon. Half the men I know can't change a tyre either.

And the PH answer, post up a video of you washing the car and getting all soapy smile

How about "How to buy a car?" or "Why fun is better than practicality when driving"

Out of interest, what university are you at?

I am doing medicine in Aberdeen and would like to think that I could do something like this in the near future as part of the course smile

A chap once ate a car, over a period of years.
You could research his motive and speak on his 'achievement'

He ate a car? Wow. Will have to look that up. 'How to eat a car'. Could be fantastic smile

I like the idea of 'how to buy a car/what to look for when buying a car'...that could well be a winner.

you could explain how a rotary engine works!

That allows you to use the work wankel a lot !

I did a similar thing many years ago on a training delivery course.

I chose a 5 minute lesson on how to wash your car. Just covering the basics: start at the top and work down, leave wheels to last etc.

Also It was an excuse to get out of the classroom into fresh air for a while.

I'd like to do how an engine works, but I think it be lost on my audience. It really needs to be something they can apply to their own driving/cars.

How to change a wheel demo would take 5 minutes. Do that.

Otherwise, maybe something along the lines of how safety in motorsport has led to less deaths over the years. Maybe too much medicine and not enough cars in that one. smile

Winter driving or general car maintenance. yes Tyre pressure should be included - the number of wombles I see driving round on semi-flat tyres never ceases to amaze!

Something applicable to your audience will keep them interested, so good call on veto-ing "how an engine works" - everyone on PH finds it interesting.... other people; less so!

Agree with LSI.

5 mins isn't long and you need something with relatively few steps that can be summarised in a few clear bullet points at the end.

Changing a wheel ( wink ) seems to be the consensus then. Thanks.

Karyn, good idea - will mention tyre pressures.
