I did it a few years ago.
We used autoroutes in France as far as Troyes, then hit the D971 down to near Beaune for a first night stop. Then it was on to Grenoble where we joined the Route Napoleon, stopping off again in Castellane. Next day we drove the remainder of the Route Napoleon to the Cote d'Azur, spent time in various places there, before heading along to Genoa and up to Milan. The coastal autostrada from the Franco-Italian border is awesome, alternating bridges and tunnels for miles.
For the return route, we did Milan > Bellagio (on Lake Como) > Menaggio (via ferry) > Lugano > San Gotthard pass > Furka Pass > Grimsel Pass > Interlaken > Jaun Pass > Vevey (on Lake Geneva) > the N5 over the Jura mountains to Dole, then home via autoroute. Amazing mountain driving, but by no means the most direct route!
Lots of this:

Enjoy

Top tip..
When you get to Monza don't drive down what seemed to be a one way bus lane (the wrong way) and throw the car onto the pavement to get out of the way and rip the tyres to shreds on the curb.
It's not a good way to spend an afternoon

Luckily the car was quite inconspicuous so we blended in well

I will be there, flying over though due to timings with work and childcare etc. Staying at http://www.parkhotelcomo.it/ if anyone fancies a beer?
Im driving down in my R8 V10 with a mate. Starting off thurs night (last ferry) and then all night / day to hotel (taking in turns driving) and on way back will stop off for 1 night outside REIMS.
Just following the GPS route....there and back. In paddock club for 2 days, been to all the other classics (i.e. Silverstone every year, SPA, Monaco etc) so Monza will cap it off.
