How does one go about getting passenger rides on days like this? I had my kids with me so it wasn't an option yesterday but should I find myself in a hypothetical situation in which I'm not encumbered by offspring, do I just approach one of the drivers and ask? Or is there a waiting list? Or do I need to "know" people? I made my donation yesterday and got my wrist band anyway, but it wasn't clear how I'd have secured a ride even having done that.
You simply walk up to a driver and ask I he has a passenger, if not will he/she take you out.
I had a line up of passengers before the day but a couple couldn't make it so I ended up taking my 16 year old daughter on 3 sessions. Next time, make yourself known to me and if the seat is free I'd be happy to whizz you around
That said, there are some drivers who won't entertain passengers as they are simply there for a good track day.

Ahh, thanks. I'll try that. There was a friendly-looking chap driving a gorgeous matt-black-wrapped Maserati that had three spare seats on at least one session, but I didn't have crash hats for the kids.
