Right, then. Which new washing machine?

What's well made and cheap to run these days..?
Anything by Zanussi. Ignore exhortations to buy Miele, Bosch etc etc............don't do anything that Zanussi can't do but do cost more - unless you're badge-conscious in your utility room (?)Every time we move house we buy a new Zanussi...............never have any trouble................always leave them behind or give to someone in need and they just seem to keep on keeping on. Had the current one coming up to six years. Last one was 9 years and we know it's still going; after 14+ years as we still hear from the young single Mum we gave it to. Amazing machines - in our experience.
Just my experience, of course.
Our Bosch is 8 years old last month, used daily, never missed a beat. Its moved house 3 times since new and we have never used the transport bolts.
At around £35/year life cost so far I can't complain.
And the kids in Comet et al try so hard to sell the extended warranties
Edit - I think Zanussi was to have been our first choice at the time, but wherever we were didn't have one to take away there and then.

I recently went for a John Lewis one, which I believe is a rebadged Electrolux.
Why?
A £350ish Hotpoint or equivalent from Curries etc. + 3 year warranty = c. £520.
John Lewis machine was £500, with a five year warranty.
(And now someone will butt in with a comment about the Sale of Goods Act and the 6 year principle but, tbh, is a 6 year life a reasonable expectation for a modern washing machine?)

It's my busted Zanussi that prompted this thread...
The new Samsung Eco Bubble things sounded good...15deg wash as good as a 40deg wash, they say.
Then I had a chat with a local shop who pointed out that Bosch do something called an Exxcel for around the same price, with a higher efficiency rating. He reckons Bosch produce the best quality at the moment.
Any more experience with the Hun...?
Just been in to John Lewis to get a new washing machine today. Got the last one four years ago, spent £72 on extedning the warranty from 3 years to 5. It broke last week, and John Lewis sent out the engineer who said it needs a new motor and programmer. John Lewis say its too expensive to fix, so sent us a letter telling us to go to store and choose an equivalent model for free. Salesperson gives us a free extended warranty, so effectively we'll have paid £425 on the washing machine (4 years ago) and it could be replaced in 5 free of charge!
John Lewis basically take the bits they like out of the Electrolux, AEG and Zanussi part bins to make their machines.

Zanussi AEG & Electrolux - all made by the same company AFAIK.

When buying last year I rang the local repair guy & he said anything Bosch or Zanussi. He said avoid Hotpoint now - you need a PC to fix the damn things for some repairs! (and that Hotpoint arn't making it easy for independent repairers).
Heard "interesting" things about the LG direct drive things so went with a Zanussi. Have to say its very, very good.

LG. Ours is doing pretty well and is direct drive. Heard only good things about them.
Three things in this world are certain, Death, taxes & that at some point you'll have to get a washing machine fixed (well, maybe unless you spring for a Miele)!Local repair guy told me they basically can't work on those LG things hence why I avoided it. His advice was Bosch or Zanussi as being reliable but cheap & then easy to fix as well if necessary
Miele. Definitely.
Only trouble is you need to find an end-of-line or similar offer to actually pay a sensible price - mine was £450 about 12 years ago (the replacement model was £850 and had a couple more programmes or something). It's now serving a family of 7 effortlessly, and the only change I'd make is to buy a second Miele to get through the washing faster at the weekend.
Pick one of their bottom-end machines with less bells & whistles to take the edge off the price - I think I only ever use about 3 different programmes on mine.

We bought an AEG washer dryer a month ago and it's been great so far.. Takes a big load, has clear easy-to-understand programmes on the front (handy for a girlfriend who is a serial clothes-ruiner) and is dead quiet. Also came with a 5 year guarantee. Recommended.
Slightly worried about some of the comments re: Hotpoint as I'm having one of their dishwasher installed tomorrow..

Another Miele bore here
Last Miele washing machine lasted 13 years. Dishwasher & tumble drier both approaching 10 years old, never had a fault on either in that time.
Just got a new Miele professional job. Expensive outlay but I bet it costs less per year than a cheaper one. Also came with a 10 year guarantee free of charge, which must show their confidence in the product.

Yep, exactly our approach with our 2 machines, bottom or next-bottom models have been fantastic.
And here. Bottom of the range Siemens from John Lewis with a 5 year warranty. About £500 a couple of years ago. No LCD screen etc, just a big dial and some buttons. Runs quiet, good results. Got it just before our nipper arrived so I reckon it's had 5 years use already!BEKO!
Having had a £600ish bosch machine fail time and time again about 1 month out of warranty I gave up on expensive washing machines and bougt a cheapo BEKO- so far so good and it does everything and more that the bosch did.
to redress the balance I bought a bosch dishwasher this year though!

Snap, our BEKO is brilliant. 8kg load and uses less water in the quick cycle than our old machine which held less washing.Having had a £600ish bosch machine fail time and time again about 1 month out of warranty I gave up on expensive washing machines and bougt a cheapo BEKO- so far so good and it does everything and more that the bosch did.
