Utterly stunning pics.

I have been considering an EOS300D - but once you look at the specs you are cheaping out and should get the EOS 10D.

The 1D is waaaayyyy beyond what I can justify. How good is a 10D going to be in comparison. Is an "amateur" but "enthusiastic" digital photographer going to tell the difference or just you "professional" types....?

Thanks. I've had the Mk II about 2 months now, and yes, it's very very good.

Have you considered a 1D Mk I? If you don't need very large pics (e.g. A3 or bigger), it does just about everything the Mk II does (and some things a bit better!).

For this type of photography, a 10D would be ideal, in fact as the crop factor is 1.6, you get a bit more out of a macro lens, and the lighter weight helps too.

The 1 series cameras really show a difference in autofocus speed/accuracy and build quality. If I didn't mostly shoot motorsport, I'd have a 10D.

Apparently its an Elephant Hawkmoth :-

Average wingspan: 67mm.

Flight period: May - July.

A quite unmistakeable moth, given the liberal amount of pink in its colouration. The elephant hawkmoth is occasionally seen in gardens thanks to its liking for honeysuckle. The large caterpillar is frequently found on willowherb and has large eye-spots which it uses as a defence mechanism.

Funny thing is, I only spotted it while I was (extremely sadly) taking test shots of the wall with a lens I've just had repaired.

I love taking macro shots of insects, but it's usually impossible to move quickly enough to get them in my wheelchair, however they all stayed still long enough today, even the fly

A strong recommendation!

I'd value your opinion if you have the time. If I was to choose a DSLR. Should I get a Nikon D70 / D100 or a Canon EOS300D / 10D.

I've practically made up my mind that the entry level machines are simply hamstrung by software...but you speak about "build quality". I'm not easy on gadgets or mechanical things and usually buy items for tougher use than most amateurs - even though I'll only be doing the same stuff.

I need a camera I can shove in the rucksack without an extra case that will survive rough handling - clearly with respect for the lens. The lenses will be changed occasionally and I will mostly shoot landscapes with a bit of motorsport.general stuff on a purely amateur basis.

Any comments?

Don't mean to hijack your thread - but you clearly know what you are on about...

From what ive seen, the build of the nikon D70 is much better than the canon 300D, so if you are going for an excellent all rounder, I think that the nikon D70 is the one to go for. It is truly an excellent camera (having had a play).

If you are seeking a professional quality camera that can shoot loads of frames per second then the 1D is the puppy: I havent played with one but the tracking autofocus seems to be second to none.

I am only considering the 1D because of its speed etc. and I frequently get requests for large prints.

Sounds to me like the Nikon is the way to go bearing in mind the massive price difference, before you have even bought any lenses!

Hope this helps, just my opinion!

I'd agree the Nikon D70 is a better camera than the 300D, the 10D being better than both of them.

The 10D has a magnesium frame under the skin, and is pretty tough, it should cope with your needs with no problem.

Personally, I prefer Canon's lens lineup and overall system, but then I'm a bit biased! To be fair, Nikon's lens lineup has some great lenses in it too.

I think my recommendation would be a 10D, and some L series lenses. They're very expensive, but if you expect them to take some knocks, much more likely to survive. I bought an old 28-70 L from ebay, it has paint chips, other external signs of wear, but still takes stunningly sharp shots.

The 1D is amazing. However, if you don't NEED its stunning AF, weather sealing, speed etc, it's a big, heavy, expensive lump to carry around. My 1D, 28-70 and flash weigh about 3.5kg, which is a lot to lug around all day (and i'm often carrying 2!).

I dropped my 300d with a 24-70 2.8l and flash onto a terracota floor in spain, the hotshoes alittle bent, the flash exploded, and the glass is fine, alls well and good with the camera!... nerves were a little frayed,

I haven't fully investigated the pros/cons of this, but you can get most of the way to a 10D by "upgrading" a 300D (a.k.a Digital Rebel) (DPReview.com review)

I'd venture to suggest that the D70 and 10D are pretty evenly matched. I read a review in which the 10D just pipped it by having an ISO100 setting.
If you can manage without that, the D70 is about £300 cheaper. The Nikkor 18-70 lens is also a better range than the Canon equivalent, IMHO.
The D100 is suddenly left looking a bit pricey next to its D70 sibling.
But as my D70 is due in a couple of weeks I may be biased!

So I take it there is less than no chance I could buy a D70/10D prior to going on holiday in three weeks, then?

Some people on here have mentioned the 1D. A damn fine bit of kit if I may say so.

As for print sizes, I have a rather nice photo of Mr Solbergs Subaru which I took when I was at the Finnish stages of the WRC last year. I had the photo (4mp full frame) blown up to 30"x20" and it looks pretty good.

www.motorsportvip.com/Gallery/Rally/solberg.jpg

The 1D is excellent for sharpness of images straight out of the camera, in fact it provides better detail than my 6mp D60. Due the the size of the sensor pixels means a weaker Ani-Aliasing filter is required = sharper shots out of the camera, better detail etc.

If you can pick up a 2nd hand 1D then go for it, you will not be dissapointed. I have posted on this fourm under the Goodwood section some pics I took at the weekend with the 1D, the link if you want to view some of these is here:

www.motorsportvip.com/Gallery/Goodwood/Goodwood.html

I picked my 1D (refurb) up for £1800 just over a year ago. Not sure what the 2nd hand marjet is like for them at the moment as most people seem to be hanging on to them as backups for their 1D MKII..!!!
