How long before I can have a drink?
Discussion
Hi All,
I had my tonsils out last week.
It was grim to put it mildly (I'm 39).
I was prescribed painkillers in the form of 400mg ibuprofen 3 x a day and 30mg Dihydrocodeine (could take up to 8 a day however a packet of 30 has lasted me 9 days - the last tablet of which I took this morning about 10am). I took an ibuprofen at the same time.
When will it be safe for me to have a glass of wine? I am not planning on taking any more ibuprofen and the codeine has all gone.
I have googled it but all you get is idiots posting about how much to take to get high.
I think I am over the worst of the pain as I have a high pain tolerance and last night was the first night I didn't wake up at 2am in pain.
Thanks

kids are happy with ice-cream and jelly then
I would have been happy to have been able to eat jelly and ice cream!
I literally nearly fainted trying to drink an actimel an Monday as I was told to drink them as you can get thrush in your mouth post surgery. Fortunately that hasn't happened.
In an adult there are 3 developed arteries that each have to be tied off or risk bleeding afterwards. The inside of my mouth looks like a cooked chicken from all the diathermy. That was aside from the agonising pain in my teeth, tongue and jaw from having my mouth jacked open and tongue clamped down!

i would say you would be fine having a glass or two with your dinner. I wouldn't drink excessivly tonight and see how bad a hangover you wake up with. If you wake up with a bad one it was too soon
the codeine and the alcohol will hit you harder than each on their own, but only in the same fashion (eyelids droop, light snore, sound of heavy machinery from nostrils)
be careful
From the NHS website:
Codeine, dihydrocodeine and tramadol
Codeine, dihydrocodeine and tramadol are types of opioid (a stronger type of painkiller). They are usually only available on prescription, although some lower-dose medicines may be available from pharmacies. They are often combined with paracetamol.
Taking opioid painkillers can cause drowsiness and hypotension (low blood pressure), and drinking alcohol while taking them will increase these effects. If you're affected, do not drink any alcohol while taking opioid painkillers.
So, it depends on you really. I was on the 30mg dose recently and avoided alchohol as I had just had brain surgery and was a little unsteady as a result !
