So whilst I am at university, my Allegro is down in Devon, some 200 miles away.
The car hasn't been moved for a while as I got very drunk and lost the keys. However, they arrived in the post the day I left. The engine started with a bit of battery juice from my Rover.

Anyway, 3 weeks roll on and my dearest Mother has decided to move the car on the drive to make it easier to jump start when it comes to MOT time (next week).
There is a patch of oil on the drive, which is to be expected, but what isn't to be expected is that there were BALL BEARINGS(!!!!!!) in the oil.

This to me sounds pretty serious, any ideas on what it could be? Will I be able to get it to the garage which is about a mile away through a small village?

Quite nervous about a serious sounding problem here.

Cheers,
Bob

With a bit of luck it'll be terminal.

Only joking- hope it's nothing too bad.

It's quite usual for the balls to drop at that age. smile

If it's gearbox in sump A-series, it might be the driveshaft ball-bearings if they can get in there as I can't think of any other ball bearings on an Allegro unless it's the gearbox itself I suppose - I'm not big on the workings of gearboxes.

Sounds shagged though....

What are you nervous about, I get an immense sense of wellbeing knowing Allegros are a long way away from me !

It would be quite impressive if an Allegro could poo out ball bearings whilst stationary, am thinkign perhaps a driveshaft cv has popped but it has a gaiter, perhaps the diff but when I detonated a Montego diff all over the road there were bits of casing, four liters of hypoid oil, some cogs and no bearings, there arent any ball bearings in the engine afaik, cant see it being a wheel bearing as the wheel would be at a jaunty angle and not given to moving.

Nope, a mystery !

Maybe the CV, I am just trying to find out the size now.
This is the 1500 engine so it's an E series rather than an A series.

Or perhaps someone who wants a bit of fun and doesn't care what other people think?

I can't either, which is why I'm asking here.
My mother has about as much mechanical knowledge as your average foetus so she can't tell me any more than what I've said.

I think some one may be winding you up to be honest.

IIRC the crank is in plain bearings, the big ends are white metal, the little ends are caged rollers and the cam also runs in a plain bearing. Where abouts in the engine are there any ball bearings? I think some one has seen the oil slick and tossed a few under there as a wind up.

Waits for somebody who knows more about Allegro engines to come along prove me wrong

I would reckon the bearings have been there already and the oil's leaked over them.

If Your Mum moved the car without any theatricals then I would assume that most of the moving parts are sound.

It'll have to be scrapped, immediately. Just to make sure please burn the stoopid square steering wheel first, before torching the rest. The have it removed and crushed.

hehe

Maybe its some Petrolhead having fun by going round putting random stuff under cars to freak owners out.

I bet you could remove part of a 747's Hydraulic system and leave it under a Mini and freak the owners out, if they noticed, or perhaps a RWD axle off a Capri, or drop a fwd driveshaft under the front of a 1 series biggrin

Really hope that its just someone dicking around.
Apparently these bearings are about 2mm diameter.

Gravel! Probably fitted as standard by BL back in the day when they dragged the driveshafts from one warehouse to another.
