The other thing is both of those were taken at about 9pm, so it wasn't completely dark, maybe less contrast helps ?
I'll try and get a few more shots this weekend

A few weeks ago I took this one after reading a thread here about hand holding instead of using a tripod.
Edit, comparing to Crafty's moon I may go back to using a tripod
I'm using the same lens a 100-400 but it is mounted on a 550D as opposed to Crafty's 7D. I should expect to get the same standard of phot's....shouldn't I?
I would hope the difference is down to my lack of knowledge and being hand held.

Had to rely on high ISO and VR for this one as didn't have a tripod to hand.

I have found I can't hand hold the 100-400 steady enough so I use the tripod.
It has had a bit of a sharpen (you can see it on the larger sizes) but nothing too drastic.

Whilst the moon is very bright it is also a very long way away and therefore any minuscule movement will result in a visible blur.
(All tips have been learnt from this forum).

550D vs 7D you shouldn't see much of a difference I don't think ?
Are you turning IS off when on a tripod ? What aperture ?
Yeah I could up ISO to help, but I'm quite happy using the tripod, you are correct though, its such a small target you have to have very steady hands.
