Hi guys,

I've just started digging out the foundations for my new house.

I knew I was crossing an old garage and sure enough I've found the foundations cross my new ones.

BUT they are 1m down which is as deep as the Inspector required me to go.

So can I just conc over them or do I (as I suspect) have to remove them as the foundation in front and behind them will settle and this middle bit won't.

God knows who built the old house and garage as the foundations are approx 1m wide !

They go diagonally across the middle of my trench so there's a hell of a lot to break out and I suspect them to be thick as everything was massively over built - the foundation for the 400mm garden wall goes down 1m too !

Cheers

Probably best to get the building inspector out again.

I think they have to see the trenches before the concrete is poured anyway?

Absolutely correct.

Do not make your own mind up get the Inspector out he will probably require deeper foundations.

I would get your structural engineer to have a look ,

no matter who is inspecting it for you , they will most likely want someone elses head on the block , a few lines from the engineer will sort that for you.

I guess you are having the works inspected via the NHBC ?

Ah but the Building Ins doesn't work weekends.

Yes he will inspect BUT they are now limiting the no. of inspections so he won't come out until they are ready to inspect (well he will but he charges £50 ea trip)

The insurance assessor wants to ONLY inspect and ONLY comes out once too.

Its all changed from the last time I did this where the priority was to get it right whereas now its to makes money (for them) Each one cost me £800+ or approx £150 / visit.

Well had the warranty assessor (like NHBC) out yesterday - he's happy to leave it in.

Council Bldg Ins. is coming out today said on the phone that he might just want a bit of mesh over it so hopefully a good result.

No bodies found yet just a hell of a lot of old rubble in the top 500mm
