Have been looking at the V8 S4 Avants in the classifieds recently. Really fancy an estate and my trip to work is now only about 2 miles so was thinking something a bit more uneconomical could be viable. Has anyone had one and know much about them. Just wondered what there was to be aware of apart from the MPG!!.

Mods please leave here, I know there is an Audi section but I appreciate the opinions of the SC, those I know and trust - thanks.

Cheers jim

I'm south coast occasionally so you should be able to trust me wink

There's not much to be worried about with the S4 V8. Just make sure its been serviced regularly. The biggest weakness are the auxillary rads; I've had 3 replaced in 5 years.

I reckon the clutch should have a life of about 70k miles although the dual mass flywheel will probably fail before the clutch wears out. Either way that's a £1,700 bill if it needs doing (I had to replace mine at a lowly 35k miles)

Tyres can get expensive around £150-£200 per corner and you'll probably get 10-12k out of the fronts and maybe as much as 17k from the rears.

Otherwise than that they're pretty bullet-proof. The service normally costs about £3-400 up to every two years. Oh, and some are known to drink a little more oil than you might expect (mine doesn't so it does vary)

My only issue for you would be the 2 mile commute. This is a car you need and will want to drive a good deal further! Short trips will not do it justice.

Little to fear with the S4 V8, only the fuel fairy. Just get some Miltek love on there and you'll be fine. Get the engine fully inspected by MRC in Banbury and Bobs your mums brother. Ultra low mileage on these cars is as bad as ultra high mileage but a good service will clear any coking.

Thanks for all of the tips, I guessed they were pretty good on the reliability front. I will have to give it some thought and have a look about. Couldnt agree more on the Milteks!

Apologies for chipping in here, but isn't it best to ignore the "long life" servicing on these engines and have regular oil/filter changes, even if the OBC says it's not due?

My local Audi dealer loved me when I had my S3 as I would be in every 6 months for oil/filter change, when they expected to see the car only every 12-18 months for a service - but I simply didn't trust the OBC!

I ran my S3 on 12 month service intervals as it was recommeneded by my mechanic. I was going to do the same for my S4 but I have been told it's not really required.

I've been looking at V8 Audi's in the last few days, possibly a 2 year old S5 as a potential replacement for my DS3R, especially if Citroen don't sort their s**t out and get it fixed!!

Just a thought. This Audi couldn't possibly be more far removed from the Mondeo.

Mondeo:
'boring' silver
Hatch/saloon
Economical diesel
Little noise
Slips by unnoticed

Audi:
Bright banana yellow
Big estate
Thirsty v8 petrol
Potential for noise
GTFO of my way arggghh!

hehe

Could afford one unless i went for a B5?? They have come down a fair bit in the last 2 years. Used to all be £20k plus but can be had for £10-15k now.
