Interceptor in accident - M11

No-one on here I hope ... saw a beautiful '68 F dark blue Jensen Interceptor badly damaged at the front today just off the Duxford roundabout on the M11 ... looked pristine from the back ... not so from the front.

Another smaller hot hatch thing has futher up the way, pointing back whence it came.

Hope everyone was okay - wondered if anyone on here?

I think I saw one broken down today at the end of the M271 too, but not being so familiar, I may have misidentified it.

I'n the late 70s I was an apprentice at a BL garage. One day the mechanic I was apprenticed to told me how his mate had lost control of an Interceptor in a big way on the Nth Circular rd . The Jensen mounted a high n/ s kerb , went through a garden boundary brick wall , then straight into the front living room of a house !!

Fortunately no one was hurt , tough car the Interceptor !

True, I remember my dad's arguing with a mini in traffic, my fault I was arguing with my sister in the back. No real damage, the mini however...

IIRC the chassis was carried over from the fibreglass CV8 and the steel body was fixed to that, belt and braces job.

The Jensen Owners' Club Forum has identified the driver as a well-known member of the Club named John. Both he and the other driver are fine.
The Interceptor in question was one of the finest concours Jensens in the world, so we are hoping it will soon be rebuilt.

My boss (at the time) in 1973, bought a brand new Mk 111 Interceptor in Pale yellow, he had had it less than a month when some jealous tt in Manchester city centre poured paint stripper all over the roof and bonnet.

More Interceptor memories ....I'n 1982 , I stumbled across an SP , series 111 model ( the rare one ) I'n an east London scrapyard . It was well knackered , but I liberated the SP Grille badge. I'n the same year , a muppet near me bought a rotten , Yelow S11 , he crudely grafted on another front end by cutting and shutting above the front arches..,,and smothers it over with filler , that he scraped off with a baton of wood !!

One day , after playing around with the carb and with the bonnet off , he throws the bonnet back on , forgets to bolt it up and takes it for a thrash.... Yes , you guessed it, the bonnet lifted and flew about 20 feet up I'n the air ....

Long ago one of my good friends had a Mk1 Interceptor registration LEO 5 that he drove from Henley to Caversham "with enthusiasm" ..

I remember when sat in it the passenger floorpan would vibrate like hell and the exhausts scrapped regularly ... terrifying but the noise of the V8 was memorable.

Thanks for your kind words. I was off having a sulk about cars and life in general, but I've stopped now.

As you will have gathered, the car in the crunch-up was not my car. My one has been snoozing in its underground Fabbocave since last autumn. It is about to be rudely kicked awake and sent off to be painted, and generally fiddled about with by some rough men.

I can't understand why anyone would have a beef about an accident that happened on a public road being discussed on the net. Besides, the unfortunate owner of the dinged car should recall what Oscar Wilde said about being talked about. I hope that his car is fixed up OK.

The crashworthiness of Interceptors was noted when they were new, and it seems that they still stand up well to prangs. The FF (called thus, never called an Interceptor) was said to be the safest car in the world when launched, with four wheel drive and anti-lock brakes. It predated the first Audi Quattro by quite a while.

Buddy of mine was a mechanic at Gidea Park Motors when they were a main dealer selling these in late 60's - used to do a fair bit of warranty work..................
