Planning a long weekend trip to Rome in the New Year. Looking for recommendations on hotels. Max £125ish a night, ideally would be fairly centrally located but happy to hop on trams etc.

We are going in 2 weeks for a long weekend but are staying in a 2 bed appartment for 60 Euro a night rather than a hotel.

Doing exactly the same thing in November - ended up booking iQ Rome from Hotels.com

Its very modern but has a good location in Rome - check out trip advisor.

What I found when doing research was that Rome was ridiculously expensive for hotels but search around and it can be done.

As you are only going for a weekend I would say location is very importnant so you can make the most of the city. I would assume it also means you will be out most of the time so as long as your in a clean central place thats what matters..

Alos booked via quidco so got an extra 12% off whihc made it quite a good deal for me.

I stayed here a couple of years ago which was very nice. Everything within easy reach on foot.

We stayed here this year http://www.hotelnerva.com/

It's not the most fancy hotel but it's cosy, functional and well positioned, and the staff were superb - nothing was too much trouble.

It's definietly one of the better 3* Italian hotels I've stayed in. It's 5 mins walk from the Colesseum & Forum and other attractions like the fountains & Spanish Steps aren't much further.

Also had some great restaurants nearby, like this one that I can highly recommend: http://www.latavernadeiforiimperiali.com/

or this one

http://www.ristorantetema.com/

In my expereince hotels in Italy can vary massively - I've stayed in many 3*/4* hotels at £150+ a night that were awful, and 2* ones for £40 a night that were great. IMO there isn't much consistency and it's easy to get ripped off - particularly in Rome - so do your research. Trip Advisor is your friend!

Stayed in the Mecenate Palace a few years ago. Roof garden restaurant overlooks the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. Quiet and there is an ice cream parlour over looking the square for the church at ground level. Chemist around the corner..... for the blisters. Train station is not far away but far enough and close to the Forum and Colosseum. Be nice when they finish it.

20 min walk to St Pauls or short walk to the bus station but you get your tickets from the newspaper stall or something and validate the tickets on the bus yourself if memory serves. Watch your pockets and handbags if you do.

Eats. Head for the Trastevere part of town, I cannot remember where we ate but we were not disappointed. We were told before we left that just head there and take pot luck. One place shifted an old boy and his missis into the corner and us next to them but the smiled and said hello as if it was normal and the food was absolutely superb. Looked back to the entrance and there was a queue out the door by the time we sat down of office types on the way home, after the evening eats, all waiting patiently and we were not rushed, just squashed in.

Stayed at the Forum Hotel overlooking the Forum (believe it or not) http://www.hotelforumrome.com/

Rooms tend to be small (not unusual in Rome) but very clean and staff are friendly.

Rooftop restaurant is great for breakfast (and a good breakfast too). Dinner is good too although there is better food available - you pay for the setting and view.

It's spitting distance to the Colisseum but easy walking distance to most places of interest (maybe except the Vatican). Really can't fault it ( plus they will arrange pickup and drop off at the airport; not the cheapest but avoids the risk of being ripped off)

BTW, not many trams in Rome! You wouldn't need them anyway - everything is within walking distance of the centre so don't go for a cheaper out of centre hotel.

Any recent advice for Rome hotels folks?

Woudl prefer sub £100 per night if i'm honest - its only somewhere to sleep - but somewhere nice would be a bonus!

Would consider apartments rather than hotels also.

So yeah i'm asking alot - central and cheap!
