I've had an E39 523 for 7 years in which time I've taken it to 200k miles. problems have been minimal, which means I've been quids in as it's cost peanuts to run and only £8k to buy in the first place. It's getting tired now and there are a few faults so the hassle factor is meaning I'm after something else. I fancy an E60 touring, but I'm wondering whether the extra gadgetry like i-drive etc.. will mean it's going to be a pain if it goes wrong.. I would be looking at something around £10k to buy which seems to get a decent 530D touring of 04 ish vintage. I like the drive in the later 530 D LCI, but for an 08 you're talking £20k and doubtless, it'll shed value pretty quickly, which I'm not a fan of !

Any thoughts of whether the £10k E60 plan would be a money pit, or is just pay your money and take your choice ? Option is to lease a new merc E class estate - for some reason loads cheaper than the new 5 series per month, though I don't like em as much.

Hi,

In short - Yes!

However, I understand where you are coming from. All cars, not just BMW, from around 2004 onwards are all very much electronic and computer controlled etc. Quite how their reliability is maintained as they start getting to 7,8,10,12+ years old is another matter. When they do go wrong, they are so expensive to replace.

I have an E39 Touring - the E61 is the specific model by the way wink and I've decided to keep it long term and just have it running. It's a 2003, ex police car and is at perhaps 220K miles. I'm also worried about getting an E61 and then finding perhaps a computer controller gives up and has to be changed in order to even drive the car, and it coming in at silly money to replace/fix.

I guess it comes down to the usual, if your wallet is capable to absorb potentially big bills for parts replacements, then theres no reason these cars will run way past 200K miles..

Cheers, Dennis!

Have you considered the deals on 7 series leasing?.....a 730d SE can be had from a BMW main dealer at £379 + vat on a two year lease/....

Fantastic value for money IMHO....

Given OP bought last BMW for £8k and ran it for 7 years and counting plus his £10k to buy one with the desire to get it up to 200k. Leasing one for 2 years which would be not far off the buy cost clearly would leave him carleasingspec for 5 years.

In isolation that deal is great but vs his requirements its a dead duck

thanks for mentioning the 7 series - actually I am considering looking at that and had posted accordingly a while ago - seems like it's proving popular ! While it is different to how I've funded motoring before, I'm moving more to the 'least hassle' mode' which may mean a new one leased. I'm waiting to see what happens with work location and provate miles then shall make a move.
