Surely this can't be for real, £175k for a '70s custom MkII Jag?

Anybody know anything about it, and to why the asking price would be so much? confused

Well I don't think its a typo - 17 grand wouldn't be enough. 175k is bloody madness!

Those wolfrace alloys don't suit it at all either, terrible combination.

I don't see the relevance of what someone offered him nearly 40years ago. Does seem a touch high, although some classic asking prices are getting a bit silly. cloud9

Maybe it's meant to be ahead of the game and priced in Greek Drachma.

Some better photos might also help.

There's no way on earth he was offered over 50k in the early 70's.

If he was he should have taken it as quickly as possible!

Exactly - £54k back than is the equivalent of about £500k now with inflation, for what would have been a ten year old MkII with E-type running gear and st alloys. I can think of better things to spend the money on, such as a bulk delivery of horse st.

This Jag just about sums up all that was wrong with the 70s custom car scene.

£175K - only in cloud cuckoo land.

I do love Jags, but it must be said that classic Jaguar owners are amongst the most dillusional.

I remember about 12 years ago- a scabby series 3 XJ with paint peeling off and a mouldy interior- the guy wanted over 2000GBP. Me and a friend were phoning him putting different voices on making progressively lower offers, until he snapped and said " I wouldn't give it away for that much!".

"GIVE it away? What? Well giving it away would probably be reasonable".

As a comparison, I bought a lovely unmolested 1959 3.4 manual overdrive Mk 1 back in 2005, one owner and 18,000 on the clock, for £7,000. All it needed was tyres (sitting 6 years since owner died) and a service plus a couple of hoses and she purred. A molested car like that I'd put at £6,000 before the rebuild, depending just how rotten it is or isn't as the case might be. Those Wolfraces are the pits!

It's the 'I was offered £54,000 for it in 1973' that gets me. Looking at some '73 list prices, A 246 Dino was £5485, an Interceptor was £6981 while a Bristol 411 was £8973.

£54,000! rofl

What an idiot for

1. Expecting anyone for believing it's worth £175000
2. Turning down £50000+ all those years ago

those cars, lovely as they are in proper condition, were just cheap bangers in the early 70s

Assuming it comes with the plate, and depending on what state exactly the engine is in, £17.5k sounds like a good deal. Plate for £11k, engine for £5k+, webbers plus inlet for £3k, gearbox £1k plus whatever the shell/interior is worth.

sadly i think the vendor is truly deluded though. I would not pay more than 40K for an absolute concours show stopping and tastefully upgraded 3.8 M O/D let alone 4 times that for a butchered Mk2.
