PPC magazine hold a £999 challenge, what would you use?

Practical Performance Car magazine hold a £999 challenge for cars costing less the £1000 each year, what would you use and why?
The challenge has two parts a drag race and handling course. It is open to any road legal car that is a £1000 pounds or less (items can be sold and set against cost). They do state that they with band any car they think is worth more, so no boring Dad Lambo!
In the last few years it has been entered by some very different cars, a Reliant Kitten with a twin V to Jaguars XJS on a weight loss program.
I look forwards to see what you pick.

I hadn't appreciated turbos were around for £1k. I'm changing my vote to this.+ a £5 boost bleed valve from ebay.

To clarify, you can buy a car for more than £1000, if you can sell enough bits to get you back below the £1000. Opens up a lot of doors i reckon, more expensive CAT C's with nice and sought after interiors, expensive wheels on, stuff like that.
I think they've capped that now, so you can only get an extra £250 (I'm not sure though).The first guy that won bought a knackered Pulsar GTIR and fixed the engine so that it lasted the day, and the last guy that won bought a crashed Celica GT4 then bodged it together to get it back on the road. So I'm thinking something AWD, turbocharged and broken will do the job.

Otherwise I'd go big engined jag, lexus, bmw or vauxhall omega for drag and strip the car out for an optimistic punt at the handling circuit

Do they specify a tyre it has to run on, or is buying A048's (or similar trackday tyre) permitted?The challenge has two parts a drag race and handling course. I imagine a set of them might be possible by buying something more expensive and selling bits of it to fund their cost.
The single biggest difference you can make on a handling course is fitting better tyres.
A work mate and I competed in the first £999 that PPC held at York Raceway, in this;
We paid £560 on Ebay for it, with tax and M.O.T., already mostly stripped out and painted inside with white emulsion, bucket seats and harnesses.
We fitted a pair of Renault 5 GT Turbo intercoolers, took out some more unecessary stuff, gave it a bit of a service and fixed a few little things and wound up the boost.
We spent somewhere between £800 and £850 in total.
We didn't win, but we had a great day.

That is excellent. I doubt anyone ever thought a Maserati would be competing in the £999 Challenge! We paid £560 on Ebay for it, with tax and M.O.T., already mostly stripped out and painted inside with white emulsion, bucket seats and harnesses.

I have a few ideas. A Mercedes A class fitted with 2 engines, there are a few on Ebay for around £500.
Above is the California Commuter a design that set on road records for MPG in the 80's. Now imagine a car like this with a 400-500cc engine. It would be good in a straight line, handling could be a problem as it use levels to steer. You can buy the plans to build one for your self.
A bit more real world. A diesel powered Golf with an automatic box and nitrous. Why auto and diesel? Simple stronger blocks and not bad gearchanges.
