I suspect I've lost the key to our old (Xreg) Focus after a flurry of DIY and clearing out of much rubbish over the weekend. Fooksticks!!

On the way out to work this morning my Mrs couldn't find them anywhere. Cue lots of blaming one another, swearing, proper swearing and us both being late for work using the other car.

Anyway, I have a spare key in the document wallet but it doesn't have a clicker thing on it just a plain black handled jobby, if you know what I mean.

The reason I'm asking on here is because:-

1). I'm at work so can't check
2). The car is booked in for an MOT tomorrow.
3). I've arranged to take it to the garage this evening.

What I need to know is, will that key start the car? Or is it just to open it up or something? If so then I need to cancel my MOT till a later date.

Also, if I have lost it, how much to Ford tend to rape you for a new one??

Oh and I think I might buy one of those key finding jobbies, it's the most infuriating thing in the world, ever!!

Cheers.

You can defintely start it with the spare key, but I'm not sure whether you can open the bonnet, which may rule the MOT out.....? I'm sure someone will be along with the answer soon.

Good luck!

Ford bonnets are opened by an internal lever - at least every Ford I've ever owned.

You haven't owned a Focus then. It's by key only.

I don't believe the Focus came with a valet key so the spare should open everything, including the bonnet.

The spare key on a Focus will do everything the main key will.

We have a Focus with one remote key and one non-remote. I use the non-remote key regularly, and used it to open the bonnet only this weekend.

Thanks chaps.

I'll not cancel the MOT then.

With our CMAX we got 1 remote zapper key and one standard black plastic key - the standard key opens the drivers door and then you have to turn the ignition on, or start the engine, within about 20 seconds to prevent the alarm going off - hope that helps

I've not tried, but don't see why you can't open the bonnet with the spare key. It should start the car too.

I think it can only be used a certain amount of times though, it's not supposed to be a 'regular' key. Might want to check that out, because I don't think you get loads of attempts.

Get yourself on eBay and buy a couple of blanks. Google 'program a Ford PATS key'. Not sure if you need more than one key to do it though, but has to be cheaper than main dealer prices. It takes 5 mins to programme one.

I'm practically certain it is a standard key, just has no remote control, to echo the general advice in here. It'll keep locking/unlocking/starting/opening bonnet as long as you want (until you wear the blade out).

I think you may set the alarm off, assuming it is armed, when you unlock unless you perform a certain procedure. Something like turning to ignition position 1 and back again within 10 seconds of unlocking? Someone who actually owns a MK1 Focus can probably advise you better on this though!

When swmbo lost the keys to hers we just used the spare until I got round to getting a new remote one, certainly I don't remember having to do anything special to get it to work. The new one was IRO £150 IIRC.

The alarm question is easy to answer. It won't have one.
