DSLR Guide Book?

The girlfriend got a dslr a few months ago and has been taking a lot of photo's since she got it, but she's not entirely sure how to use it and takes all her photo's in the 'auto' mode. Can anyone recommend a good guidebook which will tell her how to use each function etc?

I think its a Canon EOS 400d she has, if that makes sense?

As a beginner last year I would say there are two strains of knowledge I needed to stop using auto and start using the manual modes. Firstly and by far the most important, was understanding the exposure triangle and how each side of triangle affects another. I personally found Bryan Peterson's Understanding Exposure very useful but others seem to loathe it. Effective learning is always very personal.

I read that book alongside the Magic Lantern guide for my camera. The combo worked well in terms of getting me up to a level where I was confident to play about and could understand the technical resource the internet has to offer.

So easy to read and understand without tonnes of technobabble. He shows you a situation and a shot and then what you need to do to your camera to make the shot.

+1 the Kelby books are great beginner books. I would also add "Understanding Exposure" to the mix.

The best thing I did was give Mrs Baz her DSLR a few years back and made her shoot in full manual right from the outset, it made her learn the relationship between exposure, aperature, iso etc relatively quickly and within a couple of months she had it all well under control.

Thanks, I think I'll get her the Scott Kelby book. It seems to have gotten good reviews on Amazon and all.
