Does anyone have any experience with child car seats in the E92 M3 coupe?

I'm looking at upgrading to a 4 seater, one of the reasons is so I can take my nephew and niece on days out. Most of the cars I have been considering are 2 door 2+2 coupes (m3, m6, S5)

I'd like to hear people experiences with getting car seats and kids in and out of coupes. Am I crazy? Is it a nightmare?..

You are certainly not crazy. For your proposed usage, you'll be amazed at how great the M3 is.

Also as it is not everyday use, it adds to the fun for them.

I considered having a coupe E92 but as i have a 5 year old the 4 door is easier to live with . I have had 3 bmw coupes before & always loved the looks but found the large doors in garages & car parks a pain. Getting kiddies in & out of a 4 door is very easy & you have easy access to them if they cannot do there belt or cannot get out.
There is little in performance difference between coupe & 4 door ( i drove both as back to back test) & with the 4 door being £1500 list price cheaper you do feel you get a little bit more car for the money . I would recommend having the electronic suspension as you get the best of both worlds , also i believe the used value is better

I don't know if this will help; hope so.

We've got two boys, 7 and 4 and they've never been a problem in ours, in fact we looked at and couldn't live with an E46 when they were younger. It's sometimes a pain to lean in to buckle up the seat belts, but certainly not a showstopper.

I can set the driver's seat for me, I'm about 6' (though neither powerfully built nor goatee wearing) and still sit comfortably in the seat behind. That's always seemed better than the E46's I tried.

When we were having our first child I did the 'normal' thing of going out & buying a big 4x4; when we were having our second I bought an M6!

The kids are older now, so both have boosters, which gives more room, it does depend how old you niece & nephew are & what child seats you have as to their comfort & ultimately yours.

I've had a rear facing seat, forward seat & booster all behind me & to be honest the worst is forward facing - we had Maxi Cosi Tobi seats, which are fantastic, but it does mean the kids sit higher & therefore closer to the top of your seat.

As an occasional car I would say all of your shortlist are viable & would base on personal choice, although I would add the M6 boot is much bigger than m3 & s5 - which you will need for all their stuff!

Thanks for all the comments, really helpful to hear from owners of the cars I was looking at.

My niece and nephew are 4 and 2. I really dont know much about car seat but the ones they have look pretty big. I think I will borrow the car seat for my next trip to the dealers...

My wife drives an E92 M3 and we have a 6 year old and 9 month sprog. Before that she had a 330d estate so you would think the inconvenience would be significant. However, the E92 is very easy to live with as access in to the back is very good. The 6 year old can get in on her own which obviously helps. The E92 has more space in the back than the saloon/estate anyway therefore kids have more leg room.

The only minor issue is that the longer door length means you need more space when parking.

I've got a 1m and believe it or not I regulary go out with my two young daughters (5 months and 26 months old) and wife in the car.

There is actually a massive difference depending on the type of car seat/baby seat you use.

We also have an x5 and my 2 year old has a forward facing mamas and papa's car seat that sits on an isofix base. It is very bulky and even in the x5 her feet touch my seat back (I'm about 6 2 tall). There is no way she would fit in the 1m using this seat and base.

Before buying the 1m I researched the car seats as this was a key factor in whether I could justify buying the car.

BMW sell a really slim car seat that is suitable from 9kg upwards (usually about 9 months onwards) that has built in isofix clips so you dont need a separate base. Once the child gets older it incorporates the seat belt from the car and eventually separates into just a booster seat so will in effect last the duration of the child needing some form of seat.

My 5 month old is in a rear facing maxi cosi with base and as long as my wife doesn't have the seat back too far there is no problem with space (although a 6 footer may struggle slightly in the front passenger seat with this rear facing seat in place).

Cant comment on boot size for m3 but the 1m boot is actually a very decent size and I can fit our pram, plus luggage or our phil and teds (double decker buggy) plus luggage in the boot.

The bmw car seat is very easy to put my daughter into as it doesn't have shoulder straps but has a big pad that sits in front of my daughter securing her to the seat (you can see this in the pictures online).

To summarise, with the right child seat products I'm pretty sure you dont need to compromise on your car choice!

Thanks for the link. I think one of the seats they have is that Mama's and Papa's one, it certainly sounds about the same size.
