What's going to be the best way to get hold of a set of the option wheels for an E61 M5 Touring. As far as I am aware there was only one alternative type of wheel, but I might be wrong.

Obviously I can pay ~£2,800 for a brand new set.

Does anyone out there want to swap a set of the option wheels for a set of standard wheels + cash (specific amount to be negotiated)?

Any other avenues worth exploring? Do you think there's any chance of a dealer doing a swap on a car he's got for sale if I add enough cash to the deal?

Thanks

You'll be lucky to find them secondhand. Your best (cheapest) option is to ring round the dealers but as ive already tried this you'll be struggling to get any joy. The best offer i had from a car dealer was a set of 167M's (M6 Style) in exchange for mine so long as i purchased a brand new set of tyres for the 166M's (standard M5 rims).

Point to note, the E61 M5 has different offsets to the E60 M5 and the E63/4 M6 wheels so you cannot swap from them. It has to be from an E61, uless you want to use spacers / have the hubs ground down. The best place for brand new OEMs is bmminiparts.com.

(Also, i dont think the 167M's have been as popular with the M5 crowd so might affect popularity at resale, but thats your bag and its yours to enjoy).

I have the 167M alloys on the M5, I think they look great smile

Hadn't appreciated the E61 had different offsets to the E60.

Always a bit confused with offsets. Are we saying that the rears on an E61 sit 11mm further into the arch than the saloon (ET 17mm for the E61 v 28mm for the E60)?

In which case fitting saloon wheels to a touring would result in them sticking out 11mm further with potential arch rubbing issues or have I got it the wrong way round?confused

Ive no idea either. If i could be bothered to google it then i could explain. From what i can gather though (might be wrong) the higher the ET, the further into the arch it sits. A lower ET means it sticks out more. The differnce between the E60 and E61 offsets is due to the two cars having different rear axles.

BTW, im loving my H&S boxes. Very Ferrari indeed.

Not quite - the E60 wheels are 1/2" wider at 9.5" vs. the E61 ones at 9"... Thus their offset don't mean much on their own as you are not comparing apples with apples.

In reality, the E60 rear wheel inner edge will be 36mm further in, than the E61 wheel(25mm extra wheel width + 11mm centre offset). HTH

I am somewhat confused, and as with many things, everything you find on the Internet isn't necessarily correct.
The bmminiparts.com site lists the E61 167 rear wheels as being 9J, whereas www.alloywheelsdirect.net has them listed as 9.5J. I haven't collected my car yet, so I can't confirm with either the manual or physically checking my existing wheels. Which is actually correct?

Anyway, regarding the best offer from a dealer, was that a straight swap for standard E61 wheels with a brand new set of tyres on for a set of E61 option wheels with questionable / no tyres, or was there cash involved as well? If it's just tyres then that sounds like a reasonable deal.

Thanks

The bmminiparts sizes are defo 100% correct, ive checked already on my own car.

As for the deal, no the deal was to swap my 166's with new tyres for a set of 167's (inc used tyres) off another E61 M5. They were in very good nick but not new. He was trying it on to make a bit of extra dough by asking for a set of buck-shee tyres.

Right, that's what I meant, your wheels + brand new tyres swapped for his wheels + possibly ok tyres.

More or less the same thing as a straight swap + £1,000 in cash.

There's a set on eBay at the moment, 4 wheels + half decent tyres - £1300

Problem is they're from an E60 M5

Any idea what a set of standard E61 Rims would sell for?

The same i reckon. To the layman E60 wheels are just as desireable as E61 wheels. There is more of a market for E60 M5 wheels though, to supply the M5-fakers who big up thier 520d's.

I think the M6 wheels look amazing on the touring, but I'm not so sure on the saloon. My car has the M6 wheels and I can't warm to them for some reason.

I have M6 wheels on my saloon and I think they look amazing, much better than the standard wheels. But each to their own.
