Had a new set fitted 6k miles ago, and now I need a new set. There are only worn on the inside - the rest of the tyre is fine.

Is 6K the normal amount of time for the fronts?

The cars a '99 Cerb 4.5

When did you last have a 4-wheel laser alignment done?

That seems a bit low too me. Get your tracking checked. My car was very 'fidgety' at speed, turned out to be the tracking being out by a mile. Always worth a shot.

I thought it was a bit low, but I has nothing to compare it to.

I'm getting the alignment checked as well.

Being as its rear wheel drive, the tyres should last indefinately. i have replace two sets of rears and the fronts are still fine. I know its not the same power but same principle, You definately need Tracking/ 4 wheel alignment done should cost about 80-100 quid, save you more than that in tyres

Be careful when you get your 4-wheel alignment done. My local place couldn't do it, simply because they didn't have the Cerbera details in their computer. Make sure they have the equipment to do it properly.

minicooperturbo - don't know where you are located but Racing Green in Farnham, Surrey did mine on the last service and what a difference. On straight roads, I can now go in a straight line !!! and the tyre wear is far more even. RG reckon that 80% of cars need rebalancing each service. I know they would say that but I'm a convert.

Yeah, I using Racing Green for this service. Just got the car back, and it does feel alot better - the turn in is much more stable.

They're good guys at Racing Green.

Can I ask how much they charged for alignment?

Not uncommon if the alignment is out. Excessive camber can be a cause. However... very spirited driving especially around roundabouts can cause similar wear patterns as the roll forces the tyre onto the edge.

Despite being a rear wheel drive car they do wear... as they take the brunt of cornering and braking. Agree with getting the alignment/camber checked.

Julian64: The geometry check and correction was 89.25.

I've got a very nice print out of the before and after readings.

As a rule of thumb the fronts should last twice as long as the rears. And they do wear, esp for the reasons stated by shpub.

That may be due to having to run the engine in 3 times but now it is up to latest spec i am now making up for that so the next set may not last as long. thankyou for the advise.

Are they Toyos by any chance? My last set of fronts, which I had to replace last week, only lasted about 7K miles. Previous Bridgestones have lasted longer. My journeys and driving style have remained pretty constant.

Talked to Offords recently about this and they have reduced the camber slightly when my new tyres were fitted and I'll see how I get on.

I had this problem with mine and it turned out that I was running 40's on the front with the 18" spiders and they should have been 35's, so they were rubbing on the arch at full lock. My new set of Toyo 35's have lasted ages.

Apart from tracking and tyre size problems I think that knackered shocks can cause it as well, maybe...?
