M3 this morning
Discussion
So, big tailbacks on the M3 London bound between Junction 3 and 2 this morning.
First of all, to the driver of the red Audi A1, I hope you're okay. There didn't look to be an straight panel, piece of intact glass or inflated tyre anywhere on your car, and given the size of the hole you made in the fence and how far into that field you made it, this morning can't have been your most pleasent commute. There can't be many recovery truck drivers who have to go off roading to pick up a damaged car from the M3.
To my fellow motorists on the other carriage way, yes I know being stationary on the westbound carriageway isn't fun. The fact there wasn't a single car on the eastbound carriageway, of the M3, approaching the M25, during rush-hour, pretty much confirms something big has happened, but nothing had happened on our carriageway, we all wasted 40 minutes of our lives staring at two recovery trucks, three police cars, two HATO vehicles and half a mile of traffic cones to watch a bent Audi put back on it's wheels on the back of a recovery truck.
Still, I get to drive home this evening, I hope the Audi driver makes it home this evening as well.

Jesus, I thought there was an oddly heavy Police presence, but I never actually though someone had died. I also assumed it had happened during the rush hour, but the article says it happened at 2am this morning.Interesting that a number of people have already been arrested for dangerous driving and leaving the scene of an accident.
I feel for the family of person that died (crashing into another car at 3am suggests falling asleep by someone).
My commute was a total disaster as a result of all the traffic.
I left home at 07:30 and had done about 12 miles (out of my 55 mile commute) by 08:45. The M3 was stationary back to J4A, the A331 south down to the Hogsback/A3 was stationary from Aldershot. Back roads though Ash to try and get to A3 or the cross country lanes were stationary. All in all pretty much grid-lock if you were trying to get up to the M25. So I gave up and went home.
The highways agency website when I got home was showing 1hour delays on M3, 50 min delays on M4 and 'no information' for the A3 (though cameras should that to be pretty stationary to.
I think there has been a crash earlier on the A3 as well, so with the M3 shagged as well not much movement happening for anyone!

Given that four people were later arrested for causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop I suspect it may not be a case of falling asleep. If two or three cars had a coming together (the BBC article isn't clear if how many cars were involved) at 2am in the morning on a clear motorway I wonder if there is more to this accident than a simple crash.c7xlg said:

I was going the other way (from London towards Aldershot) and once I made it through the rubbernecking by the scene the only problematic section was the slip road at the bottom of Junction 4 where traffic coming off the motorway meets traffic on the A331. The traffic was queued back onto the slow lane of the M3 which given that the other two lanes where moving at normal motorway speeds wasn't a fun place to be.It never ceases to amaze me how an accident on the M25/M3 can bring gridlock to the Camberley/Farnborough area.
